According to the ID3 standard, PNG and JPG/JFIF **should be used, when interoperabiltity is wanted**

In addition, Wikipedia lists some [Patent claims](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AV1#Patent_claims) about the AV1-Format:

> On 23 May 2023, the European Commission decided to close the investigation while taking no further action. But in an email they reiterated that the closure does not constitute a finding of compliance or non-compliance with EU antitrust laws
>
> In October 2023, patent pool operator Avanci announced the start of a new licensing program targeting video streaming operators that use AV1 in addition to H.265, H.266, VP9, etc

I'm not sure how far the licensing problem affects the AVIF image file format too.

In which player would you see the data of that format?

You can convert your downloaded .avif image file to .JPG or .PNG and then import or drag&drop those .JPG or .PNG into Mp3tag.

You mean: Throw whatever image file format you find to Mp3tag and Mp3tag should convert it automagically to .JPG or .PNG?

You have to do the convert part outside Mp3tag currently.
