# Character encoding messup on Convert Textfile - Tag

Convert Textfile - Tag from a plain text file containing

Juan Félix Maglio canta Carlos Viván

gives

Juan Félix Maglio canta Carlos Viván

Any ideas?

I have never seen this failure before, but cannot see any change in my procedure. Thanks.

You might have an utf-8 encoded file without BOM therefore Mp3tag can't detect the encoding.

I do.

> therefore Mp3tag can't detect the encoding.

It never failed before.

I assume the files that worked before had a BOM and now you got a file without BOM.  
Can't think of any other way.

OK. My procedure copies and pastes from a web site into a temporary .txt file in Textpad just to get into Mp3tag, so I guess that .txt file must previously somehow has inherited a BOM, now lost.
