Enhance the tag panel

Hi,

I'm just starting to use mp3tag instead of TGF as it's a little better for dealing with non-standard Vorbis Comments (Performer, Work, Composer, etc.) in my flac files.

Would it be possible to consider adding arbitrary tags to the tag panel, i.e. possibly showing all tags that exist in the file, or allowing the contents of the tag panel to be customisable by the end user. For example, I'd like to add Composer, Performer, Work, etc. to make it easier to tag my classical music.

Thanks,

R.

Please consult the Roadmap.

Sebastian,

I appreciate the quick response to my question and I see that "edit fields for user-defined and extended tag fields" are in the "Features which are not planned" category.

But did you really need to lock the topic and prevent me from asking why?

So, why is this something that the developers don't want to consider?

R.

I locked the thread because of the statement in the Roadmap ("requests of these features will be ignored/deleted").
A reason why this is not possible yet can be found here (yes, I found it using the Search feature so please do so as well next time ).

By the way, in case you didn't know, you can view/edit/add/remove additional ID3v2 and APEv2 frames by pressing the key combination [ALT+T].

That doesn't say "why" - Florian simply states that he'll "not add other static fields to the tag input panel" and states that it's a "... good idea, but it's also much work and at the moment [he has] no idea how to implement this".

I guess I'm more used to open-source projects where the developer are more amenable to suggestions and help with implementing features.

I also searched before asking, but did not find that post.

Yes, I am aware of that. But I am of the same opinion as the starter of the thread you link to in that only 1/3 of the tag panel is used and it would make complete sense to add more tags/information to it.

R.

First of all, opening subsequent topics on the same issue and asking why the others are locked is not welcome here. Please use the PM feature of the board software if you want to ask a moderator about his moderating decisions.

I won't add additional static fields for tag fields, because there are so many of it. If I start adding other fields, say the encoded by field, the next user will request an input box for the lyrics or for composer or for performer or for the url to the artis info and so on.

I like the simplicity of Mp3tag's interface and that's why I won't add additional static fields to the tag panel. (never!)

P.S. You can add new columns for additional tag fields via View, Columns... and edit the fields directly in the file view

Understood.

But if you make this configurable (as the column fields are) then you get the best of both worlds. You could store Tag Panel "profiles" to allow different sets of tags to be viewed.

Again, understood. But if it was configurable, you could maintain a default "simple" profile while allowing users to alter the contents of the panel to suit their needs.

I'll experiment with that and see if that meets my needs any better.

Please read the thread Sebastian linked to again.

Is this not clear enough?

I added a post to anothe thread on this subject, not realizing that this thread existed. In that post, I asked for an enhancement so that I could specify additional tag field to be displayed in the left panel.

I added the tag fields I need to the view columns. I now edit tags for a group of files by selecting those files and then right clicking and choosing Tags from the context menu.

I understand that I can edit a tag value for a single file in the view column. However, that doesn't seem to be possible to select a group of files and edit a tag value in the view columns.

If MP3tag had no support for Composer, Conductor and similar extended fields, it would have no value for me. Right now it works but it is rather cumbersome for editing lots of files. Since I haven't found a way to get usable tag information from Freedb or an equivalent online database, ripping CDs requires lots of tag editing.

Since you seem to be unwilling to even consider enhancing your program to provide better support for extened tags, I'll use MP3tag for now and keep looking for a program that does the job right.

I take you didn't notice the changes in 2.35b? :flushed:
