Horrible lack of Knowledge about Tags

I seem to take one step forward and then two steps backwards (at least) with this "minefield" called tagging.

I'm using the latest version of MP3Tag to sort out some inherited MP4 files.
I firstly change the extension to m4a and this works fine.

However, my customised columns, (produced mainly by dano helping me out) show the TAG TYPES to be M4A(M4A).
Fundamentally I don't follow this because I have MP3Tag set up to write ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags.

Also, I have a customised column showing TAG SIZES to be 520707 (52707/).

Can somebody tell me what, if anything, is wrong here because I thought that the tags would be ID3v1 and ID3v2.

M4A files cannot contain ID3 tags at all, as you can see in the FAQ.
