# Losing Info After Entry

I’m a long time user and just a while ago noticed that if I make a change or addition to the info on the left side (such as adding an Image or changing the Genre), and then move the right hand side and sort on a column, all the info on the left side just goes back to what it was before the left-hand changes/additions were made. It all happens without warning (i.e., without the message “Do You Want To Save The Changes?”). I know for sure I’ve lost entries this way.

Please see the options\>Messages if you have switched off the message for unsaved changes.

These are the default options, including the second-to-last option, "at unsaved changes".

Thanks very much LyricsLover, but I can see you didn’t try my example. I regularly get the warning messages, except in the case I documented. I guess I’m requesting this as a new feature? Here’s my Options settings:

Perhaps this is clearer… Open any audio file, make a small change to the title or something, then on the right side click to sort on tracks, and the small change you made will silently disappear.

You say that you loose data after you have made a modification in the tag panel (and did not save that) and then clicked on anything in the filelist, e.g. a column header to sort.
That is how far I understood the problem.
And I cannot reproduce it with the options settings I have just shown.
If I modify something in the tag panel and then click on a column header to sort, then I get a message "Saved tag in 1 of 1 file" (because I set the messages like that) - and the modification stays in the file.
So: what kind of file are you treating?
If it is an mp3: does it have APE tags?
If it has APE tags: which tag versions do you read, write, delete?

All flac files. Your very first sentence is incorrect, I did not make a change and fail to save it. I made a change, and sorted a column, and all changes disappear without a prompt to save or any warning. it’s really not that hard. Once again, I can easily reproduce it using the simple procedure I outlined above, independent of Options settings.

Then I can only repeat that I cannot repeat it.
Or at least I cannot reproduce it with the steps I described above.
In my configuration all changes in the tag panel are saved when I sort a column ...
What I do notice: a click on a column header does not sort but grabs the column to move it ... but that could be a different issue.

So you’re not seeing it because you refuse to follow the procedure I described, Congrats. That’s just brilliant. Yes it’s obviously a different issue. You know how to use the tool. So do I. I also have 50 years of computer experience and 35 years of software development experience. When I find a bug, it’s a bug. Period. I can’t image this is acceptable behavior for mp3tag, so I guess I’ll have to hope Florian sees this post because it’s beyond obviously your capabilities.

I tried what you have noted, and I get a “Do you want to save changes” message when I click on a column header.
Are you saying you DON’T get this message?

That is normal behavior. Edits in the tag panel must be saved before exiting the panel. Otherwise they are lost. After your panel edits, simply press **Ctrl+S** to save them. Only then should you switch focus away from the panel.
I think I learned this on the first day that I used Mp3tag....

Could you please show where my steps differ from yours?
I don't see a difference in steps but a difference in outcome, i.e. I don't loose info.

If you can determine that a specific procedure produces different results for one user than for another, you must inevitably consider the work environment as a possible cause.
Therefore:
Which operating system (Windows version) and MP3Tag version are you using?
I'm using Windows 11 25H2 and MP3Tag 3.31f and have replicated your approach:
If I enable Options -\> Messages - At unsaved changes, I get the message "Do you want to save the changes?"
If I enable the other option mentioned by Ohrenkino,

the change is simply saved.
I don't normally have either option enabled at all, as too many messages and automatic save actions tend to disrupt my workflow and, in my opinion, can lead to other unwanted errors. I am used to always save anything I want with a quick CTRL-s.
Another thing I noticed:
In your options screenshot, the check mark for "At unsaved changes" looks a little paler than the other check marks on my monitor, but maybe it's just my eyes.

Good catch! To me, it’s in BLUE, when the others are in Black. Here’s what mine looks like…

On Windows 10, the blue square and blue tick are visible as long as the focus is on them (for example, if the mouse pointer hovers over them). Some screenshot tools does not capture/show the mousepointer, including the built-in Windows 10 "Snipping Tool".
On Windows 11, there are only two conditions:
checked/activated (white tick on filled blue background)
or
unchecked/deactivated (empty "rounded" square)

It's most likely a timing issue or something else that behaves differently on different system. I'll look into it and post a test version once I have something.

Thank you sir. As you have wisely surmised, it’s work flow thing. I do a lot of downloads, which often have lousy metadata. My process is to load the files in mp3tag, make the image correct, and then make the genre, date and publisher correct, then I go to the file list (right side) to fix the titles. If I click on the file list, it prompts for SAVE as expected, if I instead click on a column column header to sort, all the changes I made in the left-hand side disappear without warning. It’s easy to reproduce if you follow those steps, but obviously if you do a manual SAVE the data does not disappear. This is also a minor consistency issue.
mp3tag v.3.31 Windows 10.
