I've only tried two iTunes-created files but the tags worked perfectly. I have now proven that tags edited by dBPoweramp seem to work OK. Over the weekend I shall try some files whose tags have been 'killed' by MP3TAG to see whether they can be brought back by editing them further with Winamp or dBPoweramp.
I can confirm that I can bring files whose tags have been 'killed' by MP3TAG (as far as my Pioneer player is concerned) back to life by re-editing the tags with either Winamp or dBPoweramp.
I hope this information provides a clue as to what might be going wrong.
You can also send me one of the working files via email and I'll try to look into it when I find some free time.

I've just sent you two emails, each around 9 MBs (sorry 
) with descriptions about how they do or don't work on the Sony Walkman and PS3.
If the .mp4 codec field is blank, that means I ripped it with the Sony program. The others will either say Easy CD-DA Extractor or YAMB. The .3gp file was ripped on the PS3 but mp3tag doesn't support it.
It would be really helpful to me if mp3tag could cleanly rewrite these files so that they all worked on my Walkman and PS3. If you need any more samples, I'll see what I can do.
By "tag file with iTunes" do you mean to modify some of the values in the Info tab? If so, I just tried that and it didn't work. I also tried the same thing with Winamp and still nothing. If you meant something else please let me know. Thanks.
Yes, that was exactly what I meant. So, it seems that you have a different issue than pluto, because his Pioneer unit read Winamp & iTunes tagged files. Maybe Florian can have a look at your files too.

Oh, sorry. It's a Sansa E260R MP3 player.
According the specs, your Sansa can only play WMA & MP3. If that is the case, then you will never get your MP4 files to play on that unit.
Well, it does play them. It just doesn't read the tags properly. That's probably hopeless, though...

so if mp3tag saves the tag in mp4, no good on certain things, but if winamp or dbpoweramp do it, even after mp3tag did it, np.
surely mp3tag is doing something that itunes, winamp, and dbpoweramp are not doing; and in fact reverses if given the chance.
hmmm... is there no way to examine them side by side to see where things are different?
i was going to run "optimize mp4" on them, but if i do, i'll have to remember to do minor winamp edits afterwards.
