For movies and TV shows, Kodi and some other software support IMDb and similar IDs stored either directly or as URLs pointing to the respective sites inside simple textual or XNL [.nfo files](https://kodi.wiki/view/NFO_files) that either have the same file name as the media file with a different extension or have a special name like `tvshow.nfo`.

I would like to store such IDs inside the media files themselves, i. e. in their MP4 tag. Which field(s) should I use?

By the way, [Kodi v18 _Leia_](https://kodi.wiki/view/Video_file_tagging) ([source code](https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/blob/master/xbmc/video/tags/VideoTagLoaderFFmpeg.cpp)) does not seem to expect it in any particular field yet.

see here the list of supported tag fields:

> **[Tag Field Mappings – Mp3tag Documentation](https://docs.mp3tag.de/mapping/)**

> Overview of all available tag fields, their names in Mp3tag, and how they are mapped to the internal structures of the different tag formats. Mp3tag is the universal Tag Editor.

Take your pick.

I know that page of course, but Iʼm looking for advice from people with the same experience.

A good way is to get a file that displays nicely in the player and check for that file the extended tags dialogue in MP3tag.
This should reveal where the information can be found in the tags.

More specific questions:

- For TV shows, there may be separate series and episode IDs. I suppose the latter should be preferred, but probably both should be put into the tag.
- Should IMDB IDs include `tt` at the beginning or just the decimal number? Should one use URLs instead?
- Should custom fields be named `IMDB`, `IMDBID`, `IMDB ID`, `IMDB_ID`, `ID IMDB`, `IDIMDB` or `ID_IMDB`, and so on? How does MP3Tag write them into the tag?
- How do WS scripts store (or read) those IDs, if at all?
- Do any video players or media centers utilize such tag fields for retrieving additional information or managing and sorting database entries correctly?
