Hi,

Thank you for replying.

As of now nothing I have done has worked properly.

If you care to try wouldnt be simpler if I uploaded 2 or 3 files and you could try on your system to see if you can change in the displayed title (which might not be, for some reasons, the tag title) the word "Cassette " to "Ca".

Please let me know if you want to try that.

Yes, go ahead. One should be enough.
Although: I haven't got the slightest idea whether it is legal to publish a real file .. In fact I doubt that. So:
No, don't.
To find out whether you really see the Title, could you open View > Columns ..
scroll to the column that apparently should show the title and see whether it has
%title%
as value and field (and if not, set it accordingly)?

Could you then load a file and apply a filter
%title% HAS cassette
Then try to replace again:
Open a quick action in the toolbar.
Select "Replace" for action type.
In the subsequent dialogue select TITLE.
Enter as search string cassette.
Enter as replace string Ca

Do not tick any of the options "word only" or "case sensitive".
What happens?

Hi,

I did check the columns and it shows correctly both the %title% as value and as field.
This is what happens:

(by the way all my titles are built in the following manner;
Album name -track number- Song title.

Since all are recorded cassettes and I have no names for the original album, we use the cassette number as the album name and the titles become:
"Cassette XX -trk- Song Title)

1_ When I apply the filter "%title% HAS cassette and

  1. After selecting one song only and apply the quick action "Replace" with the appropriate search strings, I get the message "Formatted tags 0 in 1 files".

I understand your concern with the possible copyright issue but since I own the copyright couldn't I upload a file and you could then see exactly the make up of it?

I would like to help and have a look at the tags.

So this becomes a topic for the admins of this forum whether they delete the link for legal reasons. I would only to well understand that this is a forum to exchange knowlegde but not audio files.

Please note, that an upload must not be any bigger than 200k - so you probably have to cut a file for this purpose.

I've downloaded the file.
The follwoing tags are filled:
%artist%: The Police
%album%: Cassette A00A
%title%: Cassette A00A -01- Don't Stan
%genre%: Other
%comment%: Cassette;
%_filename%: Ca A00A -01- Don't Stand So Close To Me.mp3
(just as a reference, that we both talk about the same file and tags)

I then created a quick action of the type "Replace"
TITLE
Original: Cassette
Replace with: Ca
OK
(nothing set for case sensitive or word only)

Comment by MP3tag:
1 of 1 file formatted, 0 of 1 file renamed
%title% now shows: Ca A00A -01- Don't Stan
All the other fields/tags show the information as above.

So, in a way as a disappointment: mp3tag works as it should - it replaces.

Could you now use the windows Explorer and add the column "owner" in the "Details" view to see whether you are really the owner. because right now I suspect that you are not allowed to modify the file. (BTW: does it work if you modify the title "manually" in the files list and enter anything in a field or does mp3tag report there an error also?

I think you may be onto something...

I have no idea how the "owner" happens to be "Accounting/tom"

How do I change that to my account which is password protected?

What OS do you have?
It will only work if you have administrator rights.
Perhaps the following Microsoft knowledge base article may help you:

In windows 7 the proecedure is similar.
open the windows explorer.
Select the folder(s), open "Properties" in the context menu.
Open the tab folder "Security".
Now: either add your current user account (the edit button) and then grant it the full access.

Or use the "Extended" button and select the tab folder "Owner", where you add/replace your current account, tick the option to apply that setting to all subordinate objects and press apply.
Changing the user may take a little time.
Finally close all those explorer dialogues, load the file into mp3tag and try to replace as we've discussed numerous times.

I am sorry we are so far apart as I would have liked to open a bottle of Champagne and celebrate!!!

Yes it worked but not before I had tried to unravel the incredibly complex windows configuration of administrator rights, file sharing and a bunch of other roadblocks.

I finally gave up an decided to transfer all data onto another computer where I was sure to be the "rightful"owner.

And of course it was a piece of cake.

Now, I dont know if you have any influence over whoever wrote MP3tag, or is maintaining it today, but please, ask them to add a big message informing the user that either he needs to be the owner of the files to be able to process them OR
informing the user that a process failed BECAUSE he was not owner..

So many thanks to you and those who have volunteered to help.

Great that you finally found a solution.

And no, I don't have any more influence on the author of this programme than any other member of this forum. But I am sure he reads the threads and will do what he can.
