Text file to Tag - Problem

I am trying to import tags from a text file for about 250 mp3 files. Everything looks fine, but when i load it nothing happens. The message at the bottom of MP3TAG says tags loaded for 0 files from 250.

Why is this and how can i get around it?

Can you please try this with the current Development Build and attach an example text file in case it also didn't work with the latest version?

I think I have a similar problem. I have a number of CDs which I can't find in any online databases, but can find tracklistings. I want use these are a source for tags.

To try MP3Tag, I took a CD with good data, exported it as a CSV file, removed all the tags, then tried reimporting the CSV file. I specified the format string, naming the fields I wanted to import.

I got a successful message, but on checking the properties for each track, I saw that no tag info had been added.

My format string is %title%%artist%%album%%track%%year%%length%%size%

I didn't want to import the remaining fields. I tried attaching the csv file here, but I am not permitted to upload a file with that extension, so I include the data here.

Have a look at your format string and the CSV layout, does they match?

Detlev, Are you saying they don't match? I am unclear what is wrong. Must I import everything?

Hi Martin,

  1. In your example you do not use a CSV but a SSV formatted text file, but this fact is not so important.

CSV = comma separated values
SSV = semicolon separated values
TSV = tabulator separated values

Before using a CSV/SSV/TSV text file with Mp3tag you have to make sure that there are no other lines in the file except the pure value lines, so delete all informative header and footer lines. The amount of lines in your text file should be the same as the amount of selected files in Mp3tag list view.
Mp3tag can only evaluate a clean text file ("Text File to Tag"), there is no support to detect and respect if there is an input file containing CSV formatted values or having some header line or other stuff.

  1. When using a "formatstring" you have to make sure, that this formatstring mask matches the line structure of your text data, so that each line of text data can be separated into single tag field related values which are set by the formatstring.

Having a line with three different values like:
Blue Sky Boys - Are You From Dixie;Various Artists;1950;

And a formatstring like:
%Title%;%Artist%;%Year%;

It should result into three tag fields for one music file:
TITLE=Blue Sky Boys - Are You From Dixie
ARTIST=Various Artists
YEAR=1950

  1. You may use the %dummy% placeholder as part of the formatstring to supress unwanted values:

Having a line with many different values like:
Blue Sky Boys - Are You From Dixie;Various Artists;American Roadsongs - cd 5 - Are You From Dixie;20;1950;159;2.42 MB;25/01/2009;

%Title%;%Artist%;%dummy%;%dummy%;%Year%;%dummy%
This results into three tag fields TITLE, ARTIST, YEAR, nothing more.
