I have been using [Lyrion](https://lyrion.org/) (formerly known as Logitech Media Server) for ~17 years, with a dedicated network player in each room. Currently running on my NAS, but there are versions for almost every operating system, too.

There are several players for Windows that can be used. I would refrain from using WMP (Windows Media Player) or anything equivalent. I personally use MusicBee as it plays just about any file format and has a pretty robust and customizable interface. It also supports UPnP for remote access on your network.
If you are looking for a dedicated server platform there are also several options. Lyrion is popular with the crowd familiar with the original Logitech Media Server. I prefer Asset from dbPoweramp as it is pretty lightweight and has a customizable browse tree. Others include Serviio, PLex, Jellyfin, Mezzmo, TVersity, etc. There is a more complete list here you can check out.

I use **Musicolet** on Android. Great player, no Internet connection needed, no ads.
