Add Cover album in Windows 11 / XP Issue

Of course, I usually do it. That is whay I am exposing this issue, Before I move it to my main library I do a last double check to see if all tags are ok. Butt he cover is a headache because it is the only one tag that take time to embed twice.

Could you show a screenshot of the very same file that you used here
and show the corresponding dialogues in Windows XP?

So far I could not reproduce your observation. The tagging itself follows the same rules as the tag type is still the same - so it is very likely a problem either of the target system or of local settings.

Not that I think that this is the reason for your problem, but I noticed that you use a more than 9 years old version of Mp3tag (version 2.73).
Is there a special reason not to upgrade to the newest version?

I think it is the first one I found out on internet for my laptop 5 months ago. No sure....

You could download the latest valid version of Mp3tag for your ancient Windows XP here:

Hello @alesca1991, I recommend updating your MP3 tag, as @LyricsLover suggested.

Your version, v2.73, is from [2015-12-19]

And the latest version, v3.05, for Windows XP, is from [2021-01-28]

I sometimes use it on my Windows XP; it's an excellent and fairly stable version...

If you frequently tag files in XP and younger Windows versions - do you experience any problems?

Hello @ohrenkino, I already tried an old version out of curiosity, I don't remember the version, I found that it didn't work well in my computer, there were fewer orders than the last existing version of Mp3tag version XP, which is normal, we can download on certain websites versions of Mp3tag going from 2005, 2010, 2011...

I try to find out:
do files tagged in W10 or W11 differ from files tagged in XP and are there any interoperability problems.
I doubt that there are.
So I ask around if someone has experienced something else.

I just want to clarify one thing: I don't download directly from the web with my Windows XP because it's very dangerous. As you know, Windows XP no longer has updates and is very vulnerable to web attacks.

I use another Windows and I put my files in monitoring mode with my Bitdefender.

To get back to your question, @ohrenkino, I've often run tests on writing tags, especially on Windows 7. My Windows XP has no problem with Windows 7 tags. The tag panel programming for Windows XP is very different from other versions we have today. Your question intrigues me. I'm going to try it on Windows 10 and 11...

I think this answers the basic question by @alesca1991

So, @Sergius, if I understand you correctly: while you see all tag data from W7 in XP, @alesca1991 says that his XP does not show them.
This would indicate for me that some settings in @alesca1991 ' s Windows XP have to be adapted.

The OP issue is pretty straight forward. Does a mp3 type music file tagged in Win11 including embedded artwork appear correctly when copied and viewed in WinXP? I cannot confirm as I have no XP machines.

For the record, support for any WinXP updates ended in 2014. With this 11 year gap I wouldn't expect much will be done either way to correct it now. But there are many still using XP so I would be surprised if it is a widespread issue and not local.

I can only repeat:

Files without folder.jpg in the folder are shown with a generic placeholder.

@poster noticed that @alesca1991's version of Mp3tag is 9 years old, it would be good to update to the latest version of Mp3tag XP which is from 2021, as mentioned by @LyricsLover

@ohrenkino, I just ran my tests with two 35-tag audio files recorded with Windows 10 and Windows 11. Windows XP handles these two audio files very well with Mp3tag Version 3.05.

Regarding the image of the audio files, I'm not talking about Windows XP; I'm talking about Mp3tag, which handles images very well, with the options offered at that time with the 2021 version...

I'm really happy to see that with Mp3tag we can work with our tags with multiple versions of Windows without any problems. This program is great!

@MotleyG mentioned: But there are many still using XP.

I'm asking myself a simple question: how can we have real statistics with Windows XP? I've never been asked if I'm still using Windows XP. There must be many people like me who weren't consulted about this, and Windows XP systems no longer go online. If these platforms could still go online, we could know almost precisely the number of Windows XP systems still in use.

I don't want to start a debate, but my Simian teacher told me that in 2025, many radio stations in Canada still use Windows 95 to XP to run their Simian systems at radio stations. A second computer with a more recent Windows operating system manages the sound output for the Simian systems. The reason for using these Windows systems is that some radio stations don't want to update their Windows systems. Simian systems are very stable without updates. The famous Windows 11 with its updates is causing headaches for radio station programmers in Canada, which is causing problems with radio broadcasting programs...

Hi, Actually that is the main reason I still use XP. And MP3 TAG version v2.73 works perfect!

I use same version on WINDOWS 11. Problem olny comes when I move mp3 files from PC with 11 to my XP PC. I put them on my usb, cut and past.

Somehow cover are not moved it propperly to XP. Even when I embbeded and saved it in WIN 11.

When I play songs on windows media player XP, cover does not appear. And when I check them on MP3 TAG they are not neither. So I have to embed them again on XP. Annoy it.

All tags are saved. Issue only happens with the cover!

This does not sound very credible: how should removing a USB drive from an W11 PC and plugging it in at a XP PC remove specifically the embedded cover?
I would still appreciate if you could show us:

  • The extended tags dialogue of "Fly me to the Moon" by Claire on the W11 PC.
