After 3.34.1, I can no longer change tags

Hi, I just upgraded to 3.34.1 and now whenever I try to change a tag in any of my files, I see the error message "Cannot Write File..." (followed by my file name).

Daniel

Does this happen to all the files (i.e. old ones) or only new ones?
What kind of files are these?
Where are the files located?
Is it Mac or Windows?

.mp3 and .m4a
Old and new

oops - I didn't answer all of your questions. Windows 11 and they're on an "E" drive - internal.

Check the access rights.
It is best if you are the owner of the files and you run MP3tag under the same user-id with which you installed it.

Thank you for the suggestions. But I've been using mp3tag for many years. Nothing has changed, except that I updated mp3tag. I don't know how to check if I'm the owner of the files or what my user id is - but I'm the only person who uses this computer.

I don't know what access rights means, but I didn't change anything else besides updating mp3tag

TBH: an update (usually) does not lead to the refusal to modify tags in old files.

Other sources for problems is simultaneous access of more than 1 program to the same file. Indexers, anti-virus programs, cloud synchronizing programs sometimes interfere.
I have 3.34.1 installed and no problems with files.

I understand. I think I will try uninstalling mp3tag and then reinstalling it. reboot my computer. no other program is using those files, but I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for trying to help me.

Again thank you for your help!
I think I have new information which might be useful: It seems that the access denial is related to which drive the file is on. I have all of my audio files (.mp3 & m4a) on an "E" drive. I am getting the access denied message any time I try to modify tags from that drive only.

If I copy and paste the file to my desktop (which is on my "C" drive), I can modify the tags without problem.

Configure the Windows explorer in Details view to show a column "Owner" and check if that shows the current user-id (the name with which you log in to your computer) or some wild combination of letters and numbers.
It would be best if you would be the owner of the files.
Here is a WIndows Knowledge base article on how to become the owner:

I've just gone through the steps in this article. Specifically, I followed step-by-step, all the instructions in the first link (laptopmag) AND then again in the penultimate link (by VARADHARAJAN K).

Neither of them solved my problem.

I don't think it is related to permissions.

Note - if I open my music in i-tunes I CAN edit the tags!

Have you checked that the changes from iTunes end up in tags or are they just saved in the iTunes database?

What does the "Owner" column show in the windows explorer?

After i change a tag in itunes, and then open the file in mp3tag, the change i made in itunes DOES apply, even in mp3tag. But I still can't change it in mp3tag.

In the owner column, I see my computer name followed by a backslash, followed by my user name.

This entry in the owner column is identical, regardless of whether I open the file on my E-drive (its normal location) OR on the C-drive (where I copied the file to, for experimental purposes).

If you see that the new version can modify tags on the other drive it means to me that MP3tag works like it should.
You would have to investigate where the access problems come from.
The owner seems to be OK - so I don't know, what else could be the cause.

You could try to execute MP3tag explicidly as administrator.

ok thanks.

I'm just going to revert back to an earlier version of mp3tag.

Hmmm. Do you know how to find an earlier version of mp3tag?

To be honest, no, I don't.

Ok. thanks for trying to help.

Follow-Up:
I uninstalled 3.34.1 and installed 3.34... this fixed the problem.
