What do you understand by "non alpha numeric characters"? Punctuation? Diacritics? Umlauts? 7-Bit-ASCII only?
No, there is no easy way. You would have to define which "illegal" character should be replaced by which other.
As these characters are within the standard and iTunes Genius apparently is not, I would say it is Apple's turn.
