I'm not sure how far the licensing problem affects the AVIF image file format too.

other way around , I'm downloading cover art in .avif format .
then when I use mptag it rejects those files .
You can convert your downloaded .avif image file to .JPG or .PNG and then import or drag&drop those .JPG or .PNG into Mp3tag.

You mean: Throw whatever image file format you find to Mp3tag and Mp3tag should convert it automagically to .JPG or .PNG?
You have to do the convert part outside Mp3tag currently.
not exactly , rather I dreamed of mptag accepting .avif which you have succintly explained why not
