is there anyway I can go back in and either

Remove the genre and year on compliation album? when I select black into those tags, but run the same files through other software, the original compliation album and the year that album was releasesed and genre populates isntead of the actual title of the song.

for instance I have an album called "70's disco" released on malaco records in 1983 that has 20 titles from different years but I can't the individual tracks to display the correct year and genre of the track. It only shows the compilation info instead.

So it would be a player problem that it does not read every file individually.

In many cases this can only be achieved by tagging files wrong, i.e. tag every song with different album-tags.

Yes - as you have probably already done.
But assigning the correct data to each track does not mean that the player also shows the data correctly. It's a player problem.

E.g. assign the same data to ALBUMARTIST and ARTIST - this makes the album a 1-track-album for that artist. Make sure that you have a different ALBUMARTIST for each file of that album - so "Various" should not appear.
It still lets you search for the original album title

Ok.. this was a great start..however its putting more up to date years instead of the original release year. any idea of how to tweak to always pull original year the title or the album the track came from was released?

That is a question about the accuracy of the tagged data - and that is a task that you have to perform locally with a lot of diligence.
If you rely on automatisms, you have to accept the results of these tools.

is there a script of an automation that I can use to tell it to use the oldest year when doing a update of the tag in mp3tag?

The bigger challenge for you is the source. Most use the release year of the compilation you are searching. So that won't help you here.

There is a separate tag field for "Original Year" that you may be able to use for this.

All of the standard fields that mp3tag supports are listed here.

ORIGYEAR is the one you are looking for. That means your compilation YEAR can stay as expected, and you can use the ORIGYEAR field for the first time the song was actually released.

Watch for re-recorded versions though. They won't be the same.

Oh - and not all players will look at this field, so be aware of that too.

I'm sorry but ai don't understand. I'm only trying to change the original year. what tag do I need to use tag the files with the original year. can you give an example?

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking either. ORIGYEAR is a unique field. No different than ALBUM or ARTIST. You can use an Action like Format Value to set this. Or you can add this field to the column browser and/or tag panel as well if you plan to use it often. For what you are trying to do, it will be a manual process and require you to make these updates for each track. Using online sources like Musicbrainz or Discogs will only provide the details that follow the normal practice.

Ultimately it is your library. You can manage the details any way you like. Just be sure whatever player(s) you are using can work with whatever fields you prefer asa priority.

Ok. can original year be set with an action? if so, can you show me how to write it? when I do a scan, will Ihave to them one track at a time or can i run it in a batch?

There is no automation for this as far as I know.
