Feature request: Album cover thumbnails in the file list

Hi,

I'd like to suggest a small feature that could make MP3tag even more useful when working with many music files.

It would be great to have an optional column in the file list that could display a small thumbnail of the embedded album cover for each track.

Currently, I can create a custom column to see whether a cover exists, but a small visual preview would make it much easier to quickly check:

  • whether the correct cover is embedded,
  • whether all tracks from the same album use the same artwork,
  • and whether any track accidentally has a different cover.

The thumbnail could be very small and optionally enabled, so users who don't need it could simply leave the column disabled.

For larger music collections, this would make visual checking of album artwork much faster.

Thanks for considering it!

Would you like to see something similar to the Websource script cover preview for each album?

Cover preview

I think you would still have to go album by album or by the tracks that should have the same album.
Right now there is a powerful function in the right-click menu for the cover in the tag panel that lets you see at a glance which covers are embedded an how they differ.
See right-click-menu>Manage covers ...

As far as I know, you cannot see which cover belongs to which album in Manage Covers.
Am I wrong?

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I mean a quick cover preview directly in the main file list, not in tag sources. When I have a folder with songs from one band, I'd like to immediately see whether each album has the correct cover, without opening Manage Covers for every album. The idea is to speed up checking covers across large collections.

The same as in the Mac version?

I doubt that you will see different sizes when seeing just the thumbnails.
With the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-G and Shift-Ctrl-G you can quickly select all files that belong to 1 album (or have the same data in the sorted field) and then check in Manage covers ... if the covers are the same.
A thumbnail column would always display only the first embedded picture which could vary even if the individual pictures are the same.

Yes, exactly, that's what I mean. The macOS version shows small cover thumbnails in the list, and I would love to have that on Windows too. Right now, as in my screenshot, the cover column only shows info like 500px, but I can't quickly verify if the correct artwork is assigned for each album. Having the same thumbnails as on macOS would make checking large collections much faster.

This would be very useful! I realize it wouldn't be perfect, and errors and anomalies could still exist. But a column that provides a quick glance to see the primary cover... I vote YES!
