Get jpeg alongside with flac

Sorry - I am totally new to mp3tag and trying to solve a problem to import an itunes music directory into a Brennan B3+. I am being told that I need to add a jpeg file alongside the flac file to see the artwork in the Brennan B3+. Am I to understand that I cant add this type of file using mp3tag? I see a suggestion to use a playlist but dont follow how this might help. Could you proviode further details please? Thx.

What would be the preferred jpeg file name?
Are the jpegs already embedded in the flac files?

If this is the currently valid process for Brennan B3+:

you should provide a JPG with a size about 500x500 pixels:

Using an image on your computer

If you cannot find a good image using the Brennan you can use an image on your computer. The image should be jpg and not very much bigger than 500x500. It will be scaled but huge images will cause problems - so use an online image convertor to get the right size and type.

You could follow their advice and search online for cover art images or you can answer the question of @ohrenkino above if you already have embedded such pictures in your FLAC files.

To add something, afaik there is the “adjust cover” option in mp3tag

Right click on the picture in the app > adjust cover (it in 500 pixels max by default)
Could help there maybe (I mean even in case of already embedded cover in the flac file)
It can be done for the full album at once I think

@flowrian In this case, the resizing of the cover art is not the main problem.

First, the OP needs to answer the question of whether he has embedded cover images at all.
Then we can help him to export existing embedded covers.
This only seem necessary, if his Brennan can not get a "good image" from MusicBrainz directly, using Brennan's image
Even if he has embedded cover art in his music files and we help him to extract this images in a useful size, he still has to import it manually, album by album in Brennan, using Brennan's File Upload tab:

According to the documentation, Brennan is designed to rip CDs and carries out all these steps automatically (creating FLAC files, searching cover images, populate metadata in its own database...).

Thank you for the comments.

My problem is files that I am transferring from itunes to the Brennan B3 (I have no issues with CDs ripped on the Brennan).

In itunes the files I want to transfer do indeed have the artwork when I view them within itunes.
But when I view them in the Brennan environment, I cannot see the artwork, nor apparently can the Musicbrainz locate them with the file information I uploaded.

So it seems I have 2 options. One is to use mp3tag to add the artwork. However, when I see the files in mp3tag, they also lack the artwork so it seems I need to add the artwork first to the mp3 environment and then save this as a separate file alongside the flac file for import into the Brennan B3 which apparently needs the jpeg file separately.

The other option it seems from further searches today, is to ensure that from the itunes transfer I extract the jpeg file from itunes and place it alongside the mp3 file before I transfer or convert the files to flac to send to the Brennan. I have seen some threads on the apple community forum pages which seems to suggest that there are scripts to do this.

So what seemed like a simple task is turning into something quite complex!

Does that clarify the situation?

Thx!

Just a footnote: it does not make a lot of sense to convert a lossy audio format to a lossless one...

In MP3tag, you can filter for files without embedded pictures:
%_covers% MISSING
It would then be up to you how to embed the pictures.
E.g. there are web source scripts on MP3tag that let you search and embed pictures.
Once the pictures are part of the metadata, it is just a simple action to save an extra picture file in the folders.

Thx for the comments. You said : “Once the pictures are part of the metadata, it is just a simple action to save an extra picture file in the folders.”

Could you elucidate further? I am a total newbie to mp3tag so completely unsure of what I am doing. I’d love it to be simple so I can end this trial!

Thanks!

See the documentation on actions, esp. "Export cover to file"

in which you can enter a format string for the filename.
Common names are "folder", "cover", depending on what the player wants.
if it takes any picture in a folder, it may be better to use %album%, so that the filename shows from which album the picture comes.
The pictures are saved in the same folder as the originating files.
So it would be good to have files that have individual pictures also in individual folders.

Good question. I am not sure. They are definitely viewable in itunes.

When I tried importing them to noteburner and then converting them to flac they were visible.

When I imported them to mp3tag they did not show in the analysis window.

I started to add them manually in mp3tag but when I did and imported the files to the Brennan, they were not visible, nor could they be added within the Brennan by their MusicBrainz routine.

So I am willing to continue adding them manually in mp3tag as long as I can then I can fiv=gure out a way to then save them as a jpeg file alongside the music file to import into the Brennan (and see that it works for a sample!).

Thx for your thoughts.

According the official (above linked) Brennan documentation, you need to upload such images manually in Brennan. Album by album.

You would only get covers directly from MusicBrainz (online source) if Brennan could find your current album there.

I don't see any automatism from Brennan like reading an embedded cover and import it automatically.

Do you have any official source that explain that process?

I think that as often it is necessary for the device to scan it’s database again after you have added a cover with a external software like mp3tag.

No i don’t. The manufacturer literature of course makes it very simple without really how to do it. Threads on the Brennans user forum give much more detail which I followed.

However, when I posted a similar question/summary of the issue on the Brennan forum, one user detailed the fact that I needed the jpeg file alongside the audio file.

As for amending the file once transferred to Brennan, it doesn;t appear there is a drag and drop feature.

I am at a loss to understand why the MusicBrainz function in. Brennan returns nothing for any track I have

As far as I know, according to the Brennan documentation, the search for cover art images on MusicBrainz is based on albums, not tracks.

Even then, MusicBrainz doesn't have every album you own. The albums, including all metadata information about the tracks, are submitted by users like you and me. The likelihood of finding an album is much higher for popular music (or classical music) than for independent artists. Additionally, not all albums listed on MusicBrainz have cover art.

This may explain why Brennan offers an "upload" function for your own albums. Unfortunately, you have to manually search for and provide such cover art first.

Thank you for this. I figured out the function and managed to produce jpegs alongside the music file. I then also solved my issue of having album covers visible on import into mp3 - I mistakenly was placing the track number in front of the track title so mp3tag was trying to look for a track by Led Zeppelin for example called “1 Whole lotta love”. Having rectified that, mp3 tag displayed the cover making the “export to cover file” easy work (for a change!).

The tracks are importing to the Brennan along with the cover, albeit where I have ripped tracks direct to the Brennan from David Bowie for example, I havent been able to aggregate David Bowie imported tracks with the ripped music. But I guess over time I can resolve that by a bit of repetition between the Brennan and mp3tag.

Thank you @LyricsLover and @flowrian for your assistance.
