I'm heavily reworking the various tagging mechanisms at the moment and I'm planning to write the genre always in plaintext to the next final release.

That's mainly because not all programs are implementing the ID3v2 standard with the format (genre#)Plaintext-Genre, but AFAIK all programs are reading plaintext genres.
