I have the Library function turned on, but it doesn’t seem to work. Whenever I use Mp3tag to open a folder, it reads it. Large ones take time. If I close it and open it again, it’s instant, but I’m pretty sure that’s the cache doing it.
Example: Folder “X” has 9,000 files. Open in Mp3tag, takes about a minute. Close, open it again, takes about 2-3 seconds. Reboot machine, takes about a minute again.
If I open another large folder, even after opening Folder X, it takes time, so I know it’s not building an entire library after the first time.
I have Library turned on, I have the proper folders set (I think), I’ve run “Cleanup Library”. What else should I check?
FWIW, fast machine: 64GB RAM, SSD drives, i9. Thanks.
Have you tried to read the folder with the library switched off to see how long it takes then?
BTW: the library function was introduced to reduce the memory problem for large collections esp. in 32-bit installations.
Reading files faster was a welcome by-product but not the primary intention.
Thank you both for the feedback. The solution was to exclude the process in Windows Defender. I’ll show the times below. It’s worth noting that was in the documentation, so once again… RTFM. {shaking my head in embarrassment} In my defense, I had done that on my previous laptop, but forgot to do it on this one.
My largest folder is 140GB, 9,653 files. The times were:
No LIB: first pass 57 secs, second time 8 secs
LIB: 41 secs, then 3 secs
LIB, with exe excluded: 4 secs, then 2 secs
My entire MP3 library, 442GB, 52,009 files: 7 secs, about the same each time
