I moved to a new computer recently and am having an issue where the library is enabled but doesn't seem to be speeding up the load times. I don't have access to the old computer to test specific numbers, but it would easily load within maybe 1 or 2 minutes for ~22k files, while the new PC takes about 10 minutes. If I let the directory load, close MP3tag, re-open and load the same one, it will load much faster (basically as fast as it would load on the last PC with library/what I am expecting). MP3tag is installed on a hard drive, which is also where the files being read are, and the C drive with the library file in appdata is an SSD. I have mp3tag.exe excluded in Windows Security. Looking for recommendations on what else to try.
Just to get it clear: the library is used mainly to store picture data to reduce memory problems mainly on 32-bit systems and the 32-bit version of MP3tag.
Reducing the loading time is a welcome side effect - which comes into effect for files that have been loaded previously and not have been modified since.
So you would have to load all your files at least once with the library feature switched on. This first run with the library switched on will take as much time as the it would loading the same files without the library switched on.
Longer loading times then apply to all new files.
I've never heard of the 32-bit picture storage thing before but I have been loading all of these same files over and over (maybe for about 2 months now, a few times a week) and haven't had any load speed change with the library enabled since the start
See e.g. here for some figures:
If your observations are different, then I would suggest that you investigate further what might be the cause in your system.
Do you use the windows defender as antivirus software?
If yes, you have to make an exception for mp3tag.exe. Otherwise it will slow down the loading of your files very much.
Yes, I use Windows Defender/Security and mp3tag.exe is already excluded
alright thats why im asking here really is to find the cause
You are asking us in the distance about something only locally detectable?
I do not think that we can look over your shoulder.
As you say that if you
I would say that the library is working.
You have to load all the files at least once to get a benefit when loading them repeatedly.
And that first time may take a while.
Yes, I am because I am out of ideas to try
I was asking for recommendations on what else to try
And are you saying that I need to load all of the files at least once on each boot / after every restart? I assume the files loading faster after first loading and re-opening (without restarting) is because its in RAM or some other cache or something. It's not consistent as well cause sometimes I'll load the whole folder, and then the next few loads will sometimes be partially fast (like the first ~3k songs will load super fast, then the next few thousand will load slower, etc, basically changing on each load). I'm pretty positive this is not how the library worked on my last PC (it would load fast even on the first load/after a restart). And those are not newly modified files loading on each re-load
No, I mean, the files have to be introduced to the library once. And then all further sessions with the unmodified files should load the files pretty fast.
SO: the program is the same, the files are the same, the library function is the same - the only thing that has changed is the
So I would check what the difference is between the old setup and the new one.
And something else: it is usually much easier for us forum participants if we could see some screenshots e.g. from the Ctrl.O > Library settings.
Is this a new installation or a migrated one? Could it be that some files or the installed programs run under a different user-id than the one that originally created/installed them?
Just to be sure:
Could you please stop the current needed time from the start of Mp3tag and the disappearing of the "Reading directory/Reading tag data" loading window and tell us this value?
How many tracks are you loading exactly (see the number in the lower right status bar of Mp3tag in front of the playing time in brackets):
![]()
Would be
1 selected song with a playing time of 05 minutes and 39 seconds and a size of 12.9 MB.
3325 totally loaded files with a playing time of 6 days, 19 hours, 1 minute and 12 seconds and a total files size of 22.0 GB
Not after every reboot of mp3tag, just one time after enabling the library function. This is
to ensure mp3tag has loaded all of your files once to build this library for future use.
Further, there is a couple of settings in the setup options to check.
File>Options>Library
First is to ensure the checkbox to "Enable Library" is checked (sounds like it is).
Second is to confirm if you have excluded any folder paths by enabling the second checkbox to "Only include these directories" right below the first option. Or to be more precise, enable this second options, and then add the path to your main library folder(s) to make sure mp3tag can access them.
For reference, I have about 28k files in a mix of FLAC/ALAC/aac/mp3 and the entire library opens for me in about 15-20 seconds.
Is it excluded as a process or is it excluded as an exe-file with path?
The path may have changed on your new computer, i.e. because of switching from 32 bit to 64 bit or any other cause like a portable installation.
I think this was it, I had it excluded in Security as a file, I switched it to a process and the 23k song folder went from taking 11 minutes to load down to 1 minute. Even my 65k directory was like 2 minutes only. It load even faster (maybe 10 seconds) after I let it first load, close Mp3tag / change directory, and go back
Sorry for not including pictures before, I honestly thought this page didn't support it / was only text
Thanks for everyones help!
