Can't see how to restore the file explorere that used to be there on the left. Can anyone pls help?

I think you are looking for the tag panel - you can hide and show it with Ctrl-Q or the corresponding function in the View menu.
Once you have managed to display it again but it is not in the right position, perhaps this thread helps:

Dragged it across from floating and it merged to how it was.
