What I’m trying to do is tag my whole music library of 16k songs with the relevant tags so that Rekordbox can sort them into the right playlists.

Are you loading Tag Sources with your whole library selected?

The feature works on a per-album level, so you usually use Tag Sources only with a couple of files that belong to a certain release (and not hundreds of files at once).

Mp3tag allows for importing tags and cover art from two online databases — Discogs and MusicBrainz — via Tag Sources → Discogs and Tag Sources → MusicBrainz.
