Mp3tag Tools - VLC uses two different folders, from Windows XP to Windows 11

Hello everyone,

I ran some tests and was surprised by the results:

For those who would like to transfer your Mp3tag Tools - VLC Media Player data from one Windows to another, this is unfortunately not possible with all Windows systems.

Here is some useful information for those interested:

  • From Windows XP to Windows 11, VLC uses two different folders:

C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

  • Windows XP (32-bit)
    C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

  • Windows 7 / Windows 8 (64-bit)
    C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

  • Windows 10 (64-bit)
    C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

  • Windows 11 (64-bit)
    C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe

However, I don't understand why, from Windows 7 to 11 (64-bit), VLC doesn't use a single folder with the same name for all versions of Windows?

I would assume that support for VLC can best be obtained in a dedicated VLC support forum.
Even though this program can also be called as an MP3tag tool the underlying environment has nothing to do with MP3tag, IMHO, as MP3tag has no influence on how and what functions are implemented in that 3rd party program.

I know @ohrenkino that MP3tag has no influence on how the functions are implemented in this third-party program.

I wrote this:

It intrigues me that VLC's programming is in two different folders, from one Windows to another, as you wrote to me. I'll look on their website to see if this is explained...

Are you sure that you have downloaded and installed the 64bit-version of VLC in all tested Windows Versions? (Not to be confused with the 64bit version of Windows.)

The default download setup for VLC is still the 32bit-Version vlc-3.0.21-win32.exe
You have to click on the white arrow-down and manually choose "Installer for 64bit version" to get the one called vlc-3.0.21-win64.exe that will be installed in the directory
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC
by default.

Hello @LyricsLover,

Yes, I have a 32-bit version of VLC, and I knew a 64-bit version existed. I never thought about this little detail: that the VLC program could be placed in the same folder for all Windows 7 to 11 with the 64-bit version...

When I wrote "64-bit," I was actually referring to Windows 7 to 11.

If I understand what you're writing correctly, this 64-bit version of VLC will always be in the C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC folder for all Windows 7 to 11, which would make sense,
because the C:\Program Files (x86)\ folder is for 32-bit files...

LyricsLover, I'm going to take the 64-bit version of VLC, it will be compatible with the Mp3tag Tools with Windows 7 to 11, it will solve my problem, thank you for your precious help  :+1:
