Is it secure to run MP3Tag using Wine under Linux (in my Case Debian 13 with Cinnamon desktop).
I want to be sure, before using it. It would be silly if there are bugs destroying the MP3s.

I am running Mp3tag - Windows version on my mac under Wine, even though there is a native program available which i also have. I have been using it for several months now and I haven't seen any issues.
What kind of bugs do you suspect/expect when running MP3tag in an emulator that is beyond MP3tag's control?
If you suspect that something could go wrong, then it is always a good idea to work on copies of the files or have a backup at hand.
That is always a good idea to work on a backup set.
But I am running Mp3tag for Windows on macOS via Whisky and Wine (yes they are actually programs
) and I haven't encountered any issues.
That is good news, but it still does not guarantee that some local circumstances or other interferences lead to
So, there is no guarantee that such an installation will be free of problems.
you are right of course, but then you could also argue that on a legit windows pc (version) and mp3tag issues also could occur because of faulty hardware etc etc.
Nothing in life is certain, except Death ![]()
Edit: Your point of working on backup set is absolutely valid. just in case something goes wrong!
Edit2: Can I add one more edit please, I think many members on here use Mp3tag under Wine on either Linux or macOS and I think, if there would be a major issue, read corrupted files etc etc. this "forum" would be flooded with support requests.
This is a very legitimate reason to always keep up to date backups for your entire library. I always keep two copies locally, not attached to my main PC. And there is another copy I keep externally in case anything truly catastrophic happens.
Storage is relatively inexpensive, why take chances?
Just to make it clear: I dont talk about a terrible bug with the program itself. I talk about a bug, because the program under wine makes something wrong, because it’s a middle thing between a windows program, that runs under linux and is not supportet by the developer.
That's what worries me.
Have you looked on the Wine Home page and in the database what other users say? Or ask there in the forums.
Again, if you are so worried, work on only a backup set as suggested already several times in this thread.
It's not officially supported, but I’ve kept an eye on compatibility with Wine over the years. If you run into any issues, please let us know. And in any case, be sure to keep a backup.
talking about windows application running on wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator) in generally:
Normally, this does not cause programs to go haywire and destroy all your data.
In everyday use, it is more a matter of missing (sometimes undocumented) Windows calls that fail under Wine and cause things not to work or Windows applications to crash.
You should always have an backup, the majority of data loss is still due to user error ![]()
