MP4 File Checker Questions & Suggestions

In version 3.27 I have been testing the new white cross error marker for MP4 files with good results so far. None of my M4a files had problems and only three MP4 files were marked.

But:

  • Am I correct in assuming that M4a files are checked, since those use MP4 containers?
  • Am I correct in assuming that AAC files are not checked, even though they were extracted from MP4 containers?

As for the messages, I have seen only "ERROR cannot parse...". Are there other messages? If there are, please list them somewhere. If not, please mention that as well.

Knowing the error messages will give people a better idea of just what the checker is looking for (and for what it ignores).

I cannot find a support doc that explains this new feature. That would be helpfull.

All in all, I find the MP4 file checker to be a very useful feature but one that needs a little documentation.

I found these two error types (for MP3) in my collection:

Thank you, @LyricsLover! Now we know that tags for another common file type can be checked. Below are two more MP3 error message variants seen in my collection:

ERROR ID3V2.3 header parse error(ID3v1 id3v2.3)
ERROR BAD MP3 Header x2 ID3v2.3 Header Parse

So far I have found about two dozen of my MP3 files with errors of any sort, fewer than I expected. Some of the messages are hard to understand. But for now I just want to understand the basics of this new feature and to find files of mine that have errors.

Everyone should please keep in mind that these are tag checks only. As far as I know this feature does not check the audio stream at all.
