However, you should bear in mind that folder.jpgs created by Windows Media Player from the embedded cover files only have a small resolution of 200x200 pixels and are not identical to the previously embedded pictures, which may have had a higher resolution.
@poster is right - and the import would overwrite existing and perhaps better pictures.
So: to treat only files that really have no embedded picture use a filter:
%_covers% MISSING
Disable and enable this filter after you have imported the pictures to see how many files are still without embedded picture - as there was no file called folder.jpg in the file's folder.
Are you sure these cover images were actually embedded? A quick check of a few of the folder.jpg files will help to confirm. If they are larger than 200x200 then they probably weren't created by WMP.
I am curious to understand how the embedded images would have been stripped out. Are all other metadata fields intact like Title, Album, Artist, etc.?
I doubt that anyone who has not looked over your shoulder all the time will be able to say anything about this.
Much more interesting in this forum would be:
Have you succeeded to embed the existing pictures?
Did you check the result with the filter?
Yes, I did as you said.
Mp3Diag tells me I have progressive jpg files inbedded.
These are not from the imbedded Folder.jpg. files
I did not have a Folder.jpg for a couple of CDs so I downloaded images.
Do you know the file extension for progressive jpg files?
I'll look for different images to replace the progressive ones.
jpg? jpeg?
They usually differ only internally. You could modify them and transform them to the png format which does not not know progressiveness.
And just for the record: progressive jpgs have a valid format - it is only some players that cannot cope with them.
