Is there any compelling reason to Save total count of tracks or discs?
Do you use the Discnumber for single disc albums?
Background:
When I started building my library, tagging was rather primitive, and cellular phones did not exist. When I had a set with multiple discs, each disc was given its own folder (Disc 1, Disc 2, etc.) within a subfolder, such as [1992] King of the Blues, organized by artist (B.B. King) and then, finally, by genre (Blues). At the time, this was the only way to allow playback of discs sequentially—on a PC, of course.
Now, foobar2000 will sort by disc number, if the fields are all set correctly. I believe the iPhone and others do the same, as tagging has grown more feature rich. While playback on a PC remains fairly convenient, playback on a phone with this sort of organization is miserable—each disc has to be played as a separate album, leading to a lot of inconvenient menu navigation.
The Auto Numbering Wizard has evolved over the years. I am quite impressed.
For sets with fewer then 10 discs I use 1/9, 2/9, 3/9 until 9/9.
For sets with 10 an more discs I use 01/13, 02/13 until 13/13.
No.
I don't see any use in 1/1 as DISCNUMBER
All your other questions depends on your devices (like your phone) and your software (ripper, player-apps). It's up to you how you use them and what kind of organization suits the most. There is no "right" or "wrong".
I use both disc number and total disc tags on my files. While these may seem redundant for single disc albums, it does maintain consistency in the library. Some software is more forgiving than others so I have found it just helps regardless of the use case.
For the same reason I also use the leading zero for single digit disc numbers. Again just for consistency. No other technical reason I guess.
As soon as you set one of the "next disc on..." options you see the "Total count of discs" changing.
Just try it with a set of multiple TEST discs.
This will write the DISCNUMBER tag in the format 1/3 or 01/03 meaning "this is disc 1 of total 3".
