Replacing accents

Hi All

I'm trying to find a way to remove accents from all fields and filenames. I've investigated on Google and in this forum , but find the solutions beyond my technical abilities to implement them.

I found this , for example :

$replace(%FIELDNAME_WITH_SPECIAL_CHARS%,á,a,é,e,í,i,ó,o,ú,u,Á,A,É,E,Í,I,Ó,O,Ú,U,ü,u,Ü,U,ñ,n,Ñ,N,è,e,ê,e,ì,i,î,i,ï,i,à,a,â,a,ò,o,ô,o,ù,u,û,u,ç,c,Ç,C,ß,ss,œ,oe,Œ,OE)

But I would have no idea how to insert this into MP3Tag.

Can someone describe in a simple way how to remove accents?

Grateful for any advice. :slight_smile:

Try Convert>Tag-Tag or an action of the type "Format value" for e.g. ARTIST
Use your finding as Format string.

Please note that this step cannot be undone other than immediately after it has been applied in Mp3tag.
There is no way to "guess" if a lower case e once was é or è or ê).
I recommend to backup your files first.

And just one German example where you change the meaning of the word if you change the ß to ss:
Buße (means Penance, Atonement)
vs.
Busse (means plural of bus)
or
Maße (plural of Maß, meaning sizes or dimensions)
vs.
Masse (amount, weight, or mass)

I'm not sure if this also happens with other languages, such as French or Spanish.

Another example: it is a difference whether you make Locher (punchers) or Löcher (holes).
Or "Räucherlachs" (smoked salmon) and "Raucherlachs" (does not really exist - "salmon for smokers")
A "Kämpfer" is a fighter, but "Kampfer" is camphor.
"schön": beautiful, "schon": "already".
"Vater": father, "Väter": fathers
"Lösung": solution, "Losung": slogan / droppings

Or if you do a double replacement of "sehr mäßig" (very moderate) and you replace the "ä" with "a" and the "ß" with "ss" it becomes "sehr massig" (very massive/huge).

If the whole exercise is about getting a filename without accents etc. then I would suggest that only the filename gets the treatment in Convert>Tag-Filename and the
Format string: $replace(%track% - %title%,á,a,é,e,í,i,ó,o,ú,u,Á,A,É,E,Í,I,Ó,O,Ú,U,ü,u,Ü,U,ñ,n,Ñ,N,è,e,ê,e,ì,i,î,i,ï,i,à,a,â,a,ò,o,ô,o,ù,u,û,u,ç,c,Ç,C,ß,ss,œ,oe,Œ,OE)
(expand the field list to the mask that you usually use to create filenames).
That preserves the original data in the tag fields and help with the filenames.

On a footnote: $replace() allows up to 32 pairs. The current expression has far more. It would have to be split.

OK thanks guys for all your help. :slight_smile:
