Simple Export Configuration

Until recently, I could export basic album information in a manner which required no in-depth technical knowledge. I export only the last track in a set of albums so I have simple access to the data I need

I have just re-installed MP3 tag to fix another problem and find that I need to supply a configuration file which requires lots of techie stuff to create. I am sure it could be done but it might be more trouble than it is worth. It would be ideal for this user if a simple default configuration file is provided with each new installation. Is such a file available and how do I access it for my use? Sorry to be a numpty but life is too short (and I am too aged) to research and master new skills. Thanks for any help.

MP3tag comes with a basic built-in configuration already - otherwise it would not run.
The special configuration file for backup purposes that contains the indvidual settings has to be saved explicitly and also re-imported by the user.
So, if you do not have anything special in your environment, then you can use MP3tag without any further actions.

When you newly install Mp3tag, you will find six different pre-configured export scripts that are ready to use:

If you need more detailed or colourful options, you will find them here:

or here

Yes, the choice of export configurations is what I used to see but, since reinstalling, the list is empty. This prompted my inquiry. I will try reinstalling again in the hope of dealing with this problem

Reinstalled again but still the same. Help, please.

What happens if you create a new export script?
This should offer a very basic export script that you only need to save.

Still: the normal installation from scratch offers a number of export scripts.
If they don't show in your installation, you would have to find out which remains from previous installations can be found in your system.
Un-install everything from MP3tag and clear anything that may be left. Then install a clean version.

You could install the portable version of Mp3tag in a new, randomly chosen subdirectory.
You will certainly find the above mentioned 6 export scripts there.

You should also follow @ohrenkino's advice and uninstall and clean up all traces of Mp3tag. Then reboot and install Mp3tag from scratch in your usual location.

Installing the portable version did the trick. Many thanks. You have made an old man (Bob) happy. When I have completed the current project, will probably use Revo Unistaller to remove all traces of the previous installation of MP3tag.

Sorry, it is Oldmanbob again.

I can now use MP3tag in two ways. If I do a full reinstallation I have all the benefits of context dependent shortcuts, such as MP3tag appearing as an option when I right click on a file or folder. However the list of configuration files is empty if I want to export. (I cannot document this for an error report because there seems to be no way to upload a screen grab.)

To secure this export functionality, I can perform a portable installation. Since I can easily organise my activities so I only need to export tags every few weeks, this is a workable way forward, albeit irritating. However, if I could create the txt-taglist export configuration file, the only one I need, I could add this to the standard installation to provide everything I need in one place.

The problem is that the comprehensive documentation for how to create configuration file is designed for the power user rather than a novice. In particular, there are no worked examples in sight. Is it possible to provide me with simple, step by step instruction that would enable me to create the configuration file I need?

Thanks for your attention.

If you are not able to copy the export script file from its folder of the portable installation to the configuration folder of the standard installation, then proceed as follows:

  • Open the portable installation
  • Select at least 1 file in the file list
  • Open the list of export configurations
  • Select the export configuration that seems to suit you best
  • Click the Edit button - a text editor will open.
  • Copy the script text to the clipboard.
  • Close the script and the current session of MP3tag.
  • Now open the standard installation of Mp3tag.
  • Select at least 1 file.
  • Press Ctrl-E
  • Click the "New" button.
  • Enter a suitable name and klick OK
  • Overwrite all of the sample script with the script from the clipboard.
  • Save the script.
Use the script for whenever you need it.

This means that you did not uninstall MP3tag completely and did not delete all the remains - even though you said

So, what can we rely on?
