Some music shows cover art in Windows Media Player, some not

This looks like a worn topic but I'll mention it anyway. I use MP3Tag to organize albums, clean up the metadata, and put on cover art, some of which I clean up as well. It works extremely well, but once in a while I run into an odd issue. 99% of the time the revised album plus cover art shows up quickly in Microsoft's new Media Player. But every once in a while the cover art simply won't show up in Albums. I've tried everything; reconstituting the library, making sure the image file formats are right, the audio files are the same type and compression, file paths, etc. etc. Interestingly, I've tried adding the cover art using Media Player, which works correctly on the files but won't show up either.

Any ideas?

Some checks are:

Filter for files that contrary to expection still do not have covers with
%_covers% MISSING

Ideally, the file list becomes empty with that filter.
Check the cover mime type: it should be jpg or png.
Check the file types - I think the support for e.g. flac is still not quite up to the mark and tags in wav files are ignored completely.
And finally: delete the picture cache of the Windows Media Player and also all files called folder.jpg and or albumartsmall.jpg and export folder.jpg from the files again.

As this might take some time, it may be best to treat only the files that show problems.

Thanks for the fast response.

  • I can't make heads or tails of MP3tag's search filters, so I'll have to skip that.
  • The covers are all .jpg, the same size, and compressed the same way.
  • I only use MP3 in the music library for reasons of space and sanity. If i edit things they get worked on in WAV of course.
  • Not sure where the cache is. I'll look.
  • I do delete the albumartsmall files.
  • Odd, it's never needed a folder.jpg before. I create a cover file at 1200x800 for the new Windows 11 folder aspect ratio that has worked fine 99% of the time.

Could you describe where you get stuck?
Press F3 to see where you enter the filter.
Then enter the string

and see how the number of files in the file list changes.
The cache for the media player is in
%localappdata%\Microsoft\Media Player\Grafikcache\LocalMLS
(grafikcache may be in the OS language, mine is German)
