Id like to make suggestion regarding the Tag Panel:
to highlight/colorize the border of its tag fields that have changed values. It would make them better stand out and visually distinguish them easier.
What I have in mind is the approach of Bulk Rename Utility which changes both the option's group border color (to red) and the group title (it gets a red background).
I'd like to add that I think this feature would be particularly useful when the "Save tags when using arrow-keys/single mouse click" tag option is enabled: this would make it easier to quickly visually scan the modified fields when changing focus, helping to avoid accidentally saving the tag.
I quote the option description from the documentation for reference:
Save tags when using arrow-keys/single mouse click
This option enables automatic saving of entered data when the file loses the focus (i.e., when moving to a different file in the File List.
Moving to a different file can either be done with the mouse by selecting another file (or the empty area of the File List), or with the keyboard by moving the arrow keys while the File List has the focus or Ctrl+N (e.g., to keep focus in the Tag Panel).
Wouldn't such a display also lead to confusion?
E.g. you have selected a number files by allegedly the "Beatles".
But a typo crept in and some have "Beatels" as name.
I set the correct name in the tag panel ... which would mean that I change the data only for some of the files but not the ones that had the correct name in the first place.
As soon as anything has been altered in the tag panel, the disc button to save in the toolbar becomes active. So there is an indicator that something has been modified.
I tried to navigate with the cursor keys - but to do that I had to use also the tab key to reach the end or the the beginning of all the fields displayed in the tag panel and then finally, the focus jumped to the file list where I could navigate to another file.
If I chose the tab path from the last field in the tag panel, then the panel had been scrolled and I do not see the top fields any more and also the highlight would be hidden. The same applies to the bottom fields if the exit via the top field is chosen.
The option to save when navigating with the arrow keys actually switches off any kind of message that lets you check whether you really want to save the modifications. So there would not be any choice to keep the changes or discard them.
As a summary for me. highlighting modified fields is not the magic bullet against "accidental" modifications.
No, modifying fields in the Tag Panel doesn't make the disc button("Save") active (blue).
What makes the disc button active is selecting files. It remains inactive (gray/disabled) if you haven't selected any files. After selecting files it stays active (blue) regardless of whether you've changed anything in the Tag Panel.
And, even if it worked as you describe, it would become active when you changed any field in the Tag Panel. But what I want is to be able to easily distinguish which specific fields have been changed.
I've never said it's a magic bullet - I just think it would be useful to have it as an option.
But I still stand to my other description that if you have only some files which need the entered data then any further highlighting inidcating changes would not be correct for these files.
I am open for suggestions that would overcome this irritation.
Currently, the display in the tag panel only says "The following data will be written to the selected files if you save it now."
