Suggestions for Genre, Cursor and Selection

Hello community.
Dear [MP3 Tag Software Team],

I have been using your software regularly and truly appreciate its functionality and user-friendly interface. However, I have a few suggestions that could further enhance the user experience and improve workflow efficiency:

  1. Custom Genre Categories
It would be extremely helpful if users could manually add their own custom genre categories to the dropdown menu in the tag editor. This way, when updating song tags, users would have access to their personalized categories instead of being limited to predefined options or manually typing them in each time. This feature would significantly speed up the tagging process and reduce the likelihood of errors.
  2. Cursor Placement Behavior
When clicking on a text field, it would be more intuitive if the cursor were placed exactly where the user clicks (e.g., between two letters), instead of automatically selecting the entire word. This would align with cursor behavior in most other applications, allowing for smoother and more precise editing without the need for additional clicks.
  3. Improved Song Selection in the List
In the song list panel on the right, I suggest improving the selection process. Currently, clicking on a song automatically opens the text-editing field for the file name. It would be better if a single click simply selected the song, allowing users to open the tag editor on the left side for detailed editing. This would prevent accidental file name changes and make navigation more intuitive.

I believe implementing these features would greatly enhance the software's efficiency and usability. Thank you for considering my feedback, and I look forward to seeing how your fantastic program continues to evolve!

Regards,
Nikola

This feature exists IMHO, see

If you define a column as read only, then the whole track is selected instead of entering the edit mode.

I think point #1 is already available:

Point #2
Did you see my recently posted AniGif?
Maybe using a delayed double click followed by a third "positioning" click could help?

Hello @promix, welcome among us…

Me too, I sometimes click in the Filename column, on the right, to display my data on the left and this sometimes automatically opens the text editing field for the Filename on the right…

I try as much as possible to click in the right column on Path, Length etc. which are not modifiable

It is very good to be able to modify the Filename column, on the right and it would also be good to be able to prevent the modification of the Filename column, on the right when clicking on a song…

Style:

ﬦ Disable/Unselect “Filename column, not editable”
√ Enable/select “Filename column, editable”

Is there a way to program this, I quickly look in Mp3tag, I don’t think this command exists…

I am in favor of this modification, I think it would be possible for Florian to do this programming in Mp3tag for the Filename

I give my personal opinion:

I wonder, does this open a door, for requests for all the data names that are in the right column that are editable, if this is the case, Florian would be obliged to program a complete page in “Option:” for the modification of all the data names that would be editable / not editable in the right column…

Hello @promix,

I have been thinking about a way of programming that would be less complicated

I would be in favor of this simpler solution…

ﬦ Disable/Unselect “Right column, not editable”
√ Enable/select “Right column, editable”

Any other ideas would be welcome…

Thank you so much for your helpful hint!

Yeah, could be a solution I guess..

Is there any possibility to disable the feature where clicking selects the whole field? Or perhaps an option to customize this behavior? :smiling_face_with_tear:

I think this is default windows behaviour.

If you are using a delayed double click on a filename in the Windows File Explorer it behaves in the same way.

You are free to create as many columns as you like - so it would also be possible to create one with the contents of the filename in Field and Value and one only with Value set.
And then you click on the column header and hide/display the column that you need - so that feature would already be available, also, if you really need such a strange way as I bet that the simple repeated click is much quicker than to call a special option context menu, select the right option, apply the change and then return to the edit mode.
And by that I also think that my suggestion would also disqualify in respect to facilitating the handling.

If you didn't get me right.. Here's an example:

It's way easier and faster to work in AIMP without this marking the whole field...

Hello @ohrenkino, @LyricsLover

Yes it's true ohrenkino that I can create as many columns as I want and it's great...

About the right column when I click on Filename, I would like it not to open the box to write data, when I click on it, if I understood your explanations ohrenkino and LyricsLover, from what I conclude, it would perhaps be Windows that manages this...

Hello @promix, I didn't know the AIMP program, I've tested almost all the TAGS programs that exist...

I did a super quick test, I noticed that it doesn't detect my Tag URL, that the other Tag programs detect...

I respect your choice to work with the AIMP program, does this program allow us to program Tags, which are not on the screen?

I work in a Radio station, and I have the choice to work with 36 Tags that my tag program BSI Info Editor (Simian) offers me

The problem for Tagger is too slow with this program, it does not offer me the insertion of image

Sometimes I receive a lot of Audio files, I need to work my Tags very quickly

This program has not been updated for 20 years, I only speak for their Tag program...

In my BSI program There are 2 problematic tags: Comments & BPM, thanks to a good programmer in the Mp3tag community, he programmed me a Panel that allows me to place all my Tags and he creates a small software, which allows me to write the 2 Tags that cause me problem, thanks to the Tools (CTRL+1) offered in Mp3tag

Mp3tag is the only program that offers me the possibility to work my 36 Tags, (See an image of my Mp3tag)

For save all my Tags I have to click on Save with the mouse and do a Tools on the keyboard CTRL+1

For the ToolsBar, that you see on the screen, I created it from a virtual keyboard program, I redid a complete programming to create this ToolsBar...

It would be better directly in the Mp3tag program that's for sure, I made a request for ToolsBar (CTRL+0 to CRTL+9) to Florian, it's written in his wish list... :slightly_smiling_face:

..

Thank you for sharing your workflow and use case, @Sergius ! It's fascinating to hear how you're utilizing MP3Tag for such complex operations, especially with so many tags and custom features.

In my case, my needs are much simpler - I primarily use the program to quickly edit a small set of fields: Title, Artist, Album, Year, Track, Genre and Artwork.

Speed and efficiency are crucial for me, so I find that the "click-to-select-the-entire-field" behavior actually slows me down significantly. This is why I was curious if there’s any way to disable or customize this feature to better suit a faster workflow.

Thanks again for your insights, and it’s always great to see how versatile MP3Tag can be!

Solution found by: @ohrenkino

  • Filename: Mp3tag standard
    Definition for a read/write filename column (r/w)

Name Filename (r/w)
Value %_filename_ext%
Field: %_filename_ext%

  • Filename: MP3tag Modified
    -Definition for a read-only filename column (r/o)

Name Filename (r/o)
Value %_filename_ext%
Field:

Thank you very much ohrenkino :+1:

I understand @promix, you don't need to edit as many Tags as me and if the AIMP program allows you to quickly edit a small set of Tags, happy for you...

The Mp3tag program is more complete, there are so many possibilities in this program, for me this program is really the best of the best and Florian is constantly adding new functions and fixing bugs quite quickly

I often look at the writings of LyricsLover, ohrenkino, MotleyG, Florian and the other members, a great team who share their problems and their findings, even thanks to the new members who ask their questions, I learn new functions in Mp3tag...

Promix, @ohrenkino gave us a solution about the list panels of the programmable columns on the right, example Filename, when you click on it which sometimes opens the text editing field for the file name...

We can continue to read and modify the Filename column on the right or only read the Filename column without being able to modify it, I find this is excellent...

In addition I believe that we can make this data modification with the other modifiable columns...

Thank you for your questions, especially the 3rd point, which touched me personally, I am happy with this solution, I never modify in these columns by Mp3tag, those who modify in these columns by Mp3tag, will be able to continue to do it, it benefits everyone, I would never have thought of asking the question, I thought that there was no solution to this problem, I told myself that perhaps making a request to Florian to add a command in the General page of the program, could solve the solution, I think, that I would have continued to live with it...

Thank you for your detailed response,@Sergius ! It’s always inspiring to see how deeply you and others in the community utilize MP3Tag.

@Florian Hi! I was wondering what you think about this suggestion:

Would it be possible to implement something like this in the future?
By the way, I absolutely love your software - thank you for all the amazing work!
