Tag value for genre inconsistent between Mp3tag and iTunes

Hi,

New user here. I read the FAQ and searched the forum but couldn't find an answer.

My music library is mainly m4a files from ripping CD in iTunes (ver 12.5.3.16).

I then use MusicBrainz Picard (with last.fm plus plugin) to fetch values for, among others, "genre" tag.
This typically yield multiple values in the tag, e.g. "Folk; Rock; Bluegrass"

When I hit save in Picard, I then look in Mp3tag and see "Bluegrass" as value.
And when I look in iTunes, I see "Folk" as value.

From my tests, it seems that Mp3tag always displays the last values, and iTunes the first.
Value "Folk" is also displayed in Windows Explorer and in TagScanner.

Is this a normal behavior, working as designed?

Apparently you have a multivalue field for GENRE.
Check the extended tags dialogue (Alt-T) to see several genre fields.
You can merge these fields to one field and then apply that separator that is supported by your target player. There is no standard for multivalue fields, so you have to live with compromises.

Hi ohrenkino,

When I check with extended tags dialogue (Alt-T), I can see only one field GENRE (see attached file).
Is there something I'm missing?

It looks as though there is no multivalue field.
But just one that has the contents "Bluegrass".

Could it be that iTunes still has the old value stored in its database?

Interesting would be a file that actually has several entries like you described in the original post: "Folk; Rock; Bluegrass".
