Title tag in MKV files not shown in Windows Explorer. My MKV titles normally show in the windows explorer title column without any issues. If I edit the title in MP3Tag they no longer show in explorer. I can fix the messed up title by replacing it using Propedit. Then works perfectly again. MP3Tag seems to be able to read the messed up titles even though windows explorer can't. Other file types like flac don't seem to be effected. Just MKV.
Here is a thread from an internet search that claims that the Windows Explorer cannot read MKV metadata at all without extra help:
So I would first investigate the abilities of the Windows Explorer and then check what MP3tag can do.
I already had Icaros installed and I just updated to latest v3.3. It has not changed the MKV title issue with explorer and MP3Tag. MP3Tag modified MKV titles do not show in Windows Explorer. They do show in MediaInfo app which is interesting. Propedit created Titles work everywhere.
I do not think that MP3tag changed the way it writes mkv meta data.
The test bed is the WIndows Explorer plus an extension which are both third party products beyond the controle of MP3tag.
I wonder: how do old files behave? Do they still show the data as before? Or have they also lost the details?
I have only few MKV-files and did not add tags to them till now.
I tested ist now and added the title-tag to a mkv-file. In my W10-22H2 without any addons for the explorer the title-tag is shown in the column (if defined) and in the details.
I use Potplayer and it shows the MP3Tag Titles in the MKV files just as MediaInfo does. I think Potplayer is using MediaInfo. Interesting that the messed up Titles work in some programs and not others. If you download PropEdit you can drag a MKV into it and create your own title for the file. You will see that it shows in Windows Explorer, MediaInfo and MP3Tag, just as it should. Works everywhere!
You are right. In a Windows 10 without installed Icaros, I can see the properties TITLE and COMMENT too:
I didn't found the tag for "Untertitel" (maybe SUBTITLE) or "Markierungen" yet.
It seems that Icaros has an issue to display metadata from MKV in Windows File Explorer.
@anthony_smith75 : I suggest to report this issue here:
Ok I just disabled Icaros to see if the MKV files with Titles created by MP3Tag work in Windows Explorer as they should. Yes they do work when Icaros is disabled! So will log the issue with Icaros support then, as their good program may well be the issue here.
Done.
Ok have done some additional research and testing. Some programs like MKVToolNix and PropEdit will write a normal Title Tag. MP3Tag appears to only write Global MKV Tags. Very confusing. Windows Explorer without Icaros (Windows 11 22H2) will read both tag types but prefers global tags. Icaros will only read normal tags and ignores ALL global tags. We need some consistency here! Can we add normal MKV Title tag support to MP3Tag
!
Have you already tried the v3.3.1 Beta 1 from here?
These Changes are listed for MKV
Added MKV tag parser - MKV tags can now be viewed in File Explorer
Fixed cover parsing in MKV files with WEBP or GIF covers embedded
At least I can see the TITLE tag content in Windows Explorer again.
But all the other tags like ALBUM, GENRE or YEAR are still not visible.
Can you confirm this?
Just tested the Icaros 3.31 Beta1. Can confirm the Titles for MKV now work as they do in Windows 11 without Icaros installed. MKV Global tags have priority which is what MP3Tag writes. If there are no global tags then the normal tags are shown. If MKV has both normal and global then MP3Tag shows the newest and updates global tag when changed. Album, Album Artist, Genre, Year, Comments, Bitrate, Bitdepth, AudioTracks, VideoTracks and MANY MORE are working for MKV and FLAC files with Icaros 3.31 installed. Problem seems solved! Much thanks to all.
Just did Windows Update to Windows 11 22H2. I was on 21H2. Sorry for any confusion as I thought I was already up to date. 22H2 has broke Icaros again. I have disabled it to get the MKV Titles and other tags working in Windows Explorer.
