Upload csv file to apply tags

new trial user here.

is it possible with your app to upload a csv file? i have successfully downloaded a csv file with all of the tags from a large list of mp3 files.

now after manually editing the csv file, am i able to upload it back to the large list of files and apply the updated tags?

if so, please explain how i would go about doing this, thanks!

See the documentation:

On a side note: which functions are you missing in MP3tag that you have to edit tag data in a csv file and go through the trouble of the export and import?

I’m trying to fix ~700 files where missing tags cant be grabbed from the file name. its cool that this app can do that, but i would think that my situation is the rule rather than the exception.

I’m a bit surprised that the option of exporting to csv even exists at all if you can’t then use the csv to edit the tags. I’m curious what people are using the csv for?

So am I. That is why I am asking.
I would not go through the trouble with text export and import (csv is nothing more - and as you can export more or less any format that is text based, you could also export HTML, XML, RTF and probably many more).

If you described what you intend to do then I am pretty sure that are better functions in MP3tag than in a program that deals with csv files.

If you are looking for files with missing tag field information, I would recommend the filter with e.g.
album MISSING
to show files without data for ALBUM.

If you want to copy the ARTIST to the ALBUMARTIST, then there are powerful actions that will do it for you in 1 go even if the data in ARTIST varies.
But as do not know what your specific problem is, I have to ask for more details

so are you saying that you can import a csv then? how do i do this?

in my case the missing tags do not exist anywhere. not in the file name, not anywhere within the metadata.

So how do you know what the correct metadata would be? How would a csv data transfer help as that would mean that you first type in the data (in probably the spreadsheet) and then have to take care that no comma or semicolon is part of the data so that the field count does not get upset instead of adding the data directly in MP3tag.
So, again: which function are you looking for?

Who made this list and how come it exactly matches your music files?

i selected ~700 mp3 files from the mac’s finder and dropped them into mp3tag app’s main window. then clicked the export button. voila! csv file downloaded.

now if i could just figure out how to import it back into the file list (after editing of course) i would be a happy camper! any idea how to do this?

yes I’m filling in the missing metadata manually in a spreadsheet

someone please just say “no mp3tag can not import csv files”

Why do you want to see that statement?
The function is called that MP3tag can import data from a text file - if that file happens to be in csv format: fine.
You have to take care to define a pattern of fields that matches the pattern found in the text source file.
There is no ready made pattern for that. You have to create it.

Please see this post for a link to the documentation on how to import from text files, e.g., CSV via Convert → Text File - Tag.

thank you so much! this is the answer i was hoping for. I’ll have to give it a try.

That answer was given to you in post #2
