After ripping all my CDs to WAV (storage is cheap these days) and tagging them all, I realized that some music player apps I've tried (including Windows Media Player itself) recognize all the important tags except for the disc number tag. This results in albums with multiple discs getting jumbled up (it'll play track 1 from disc 1, track 1 from disc 2, and so on), so I know the obvious solution is to either renumber all the tracks that span multiple discs or just convert them all to a different format. The version of the tags displayed in MP3tag is ID3v2.3 (ID3v2.3 RIFF).
I know WAV file tags are still kind of new and inconsistent, and the general consensus is to just use some other lossless format (I've confirmed converting everything to FLAC or ALAC works fine), but since I do a lot of work with WAV files, all the modern support for WAV tags has been really useful so I like to stick with them when possible. Since the disc tags play nicely with some apps but not others, I'm guessing that this is on the developers of the various media player apps to fully support all WAV tags, but maybe there's a trick somewhere I'm missing that might improve compatibility? Or if not, some sort of layman's explanation for why disc tags might be ignored for WAV files but not other formats, just because this stuff is cool and I like learning about it? Thanks!
