Why I Stopped Using Popularimeter Ratings

I once thought that they would be useful, but no longer. There is a serious flaw in the concept.

The problem is that a Popularimeter rating is a relative judgment that has value only at the time that it was made.

Years later almost all of my ratings are grossly obsolete. Sometimes because my tastes have changed. Sometimes because I acquired other versions of a song that I prefer. Sometimes I tire of certain recordings that I played too often. But my Popularimeter ratings are frozen in time.

Reviewing some of my old ratings, I was astonished to discover that today I would give every single recording a different rating (mostly lower). However, on reflection this makes sense. My known "universe" of recordings is much larger now, my tastes have evolved, and my collection has grown.

Users may want to reconsider spending time on these ratings, unless they are willing to update them often. I myself have no interest in tackling that chore.

I completely agree. Ratings are absolutely down to individual taste - which can change over time.
Additionally, some players simply do not pick up any values, some do not write them to the files, and others create their own tag field world that no-one else can read.
I have a unifying action that sets the POPULARIMETER to
ohrenkino|128|1
which sets a nice medium value in all those players that dare to read the field.
But as it is the same for all files it is actually of no use.

100% agreed.
If this POPULARIMETER content should make sense, then a rating date would be nessecary for every new rating for the same song.
The syntax should be something like this
Date|Email|Rating|Playcounter
Example:
20250128-194015|Windows Media Player 9 Series|255
Then we could see how our own taste has changed over time, or at least what taste we had (how many) years ago. :innocent:
