All I want to do is apply album artwork without Mp3tag changing all the metadata i.e. filename track number etc.
As the filename is something that the OS manages, embedding a cover does not change it.
Try to drag&drop the picture to the cover area in the tag panel and then save the modification with Ctrl-S
Technically, changing the embedded album artwork also changes the metadata.
I assume, you don't want to change metadata like ARTIST, ALBUM, YEAR, GENRE, TRACK and the filename?
If you only change the cover art, as @ohrenkino mentioned, and don't use any of the Converters or Actions, nothing else will be changed.
There is only one thing you have to check first if you apply cover art to MP3 files:
Do you want to write your metadata as ID3v2.3 or ID3v2.4 for MP3?
So check the settings in File -> Options -> Tag -> Mpeg and choose the best fit in the "Write" section.
BTW: What exactly do you mean with your title and "Obfuscation"?
I mean if I have an album of any number of songs all tagged with the correct sont title artist album artist album year track number genre and then drag the files into Mp3tag select all the files right click them > tag sources > discogs album and artist and select an album cover and click next the program changes the title of the songs and also just changes the track numbers (#) to 0
Why their advice feels like a trap
The user said: "If you don't use any of the Converters or Actions, nothing else will be changed." The problem: In Mp3tag, that "Album Icon" you’ve been clicking counts as a "Tag Source" action. So, in their mind, they are right. In your reality, the program has a "self-destruct" button sitting right in the middle of the toolbar, and they are acting like it's your fault for clicking it.
If you use Tag Sources -> Cover Art -> Discogs this should not change anything else, AFAIK.
Which tag source did you use exactly?
What "Album Icon" is your AI speaking about?
Could you please show us a screenshot?
You'd need to use Tag Sources → Cover Art → Discogs Artist + Album if you only want to import cover art via Tag Sources.
If I were you, I'd stop using this "AI". It's not helpful, and only adds to the confusion.
