Auto-numbering wizard fails to renumber

I tried to renumber with leading zeros. It's been a while since I've used this feature. It doesn't change the track number. It's so easy to use, I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong. I'm running version 3.27a.

One way to renumber your TRACK is using Convert → Auto-numbering wizard:

Please show us with a screenshot what you have tried so far. Maybe we can see a syntax error.

MP4 tags do not allow leading zeros. So: which file format do you use?

The original problem was misnumbering of MP3 tracks 7 - 11 as tracks 1 - 5. This caused duplicate track numbers 1 - 5 (Chapters07 - Chapter11). I tried using the auto-numbering wizard but the only reaction was the "OK" button blinked. I corrected the tracks manually so they would play in the proper order. The screenshot shows the setup of the wizard.

The default starting number is 1. If you want to start with

then you have to enter that as starting number.
I still don't get where the numbering wizard failed as right now everything looks fine to me

My understanding is when the radio button to add a leading zero is checked, and the "Ok" button is activated, track "1" should become track "01", "2" should become "02", etc. I even tried completely removing all tags, then auto-numbering all tracks. That didn't work either.

Can you enable the column to show the tag type and post a screenshot? Your files all show mp3 but are behaving like mp4.

The leading numbers depend on the maximum number of digits of the last number for each set of files.
As the field TRACK is numeric, every decently implemented program will sort correctly by track, with or without leading zeros.

If you want to get a user-defined number of digits, padded with zeros if necessary, use
Convert>Tag-Tag for TRACK
Format string: $num(%track%,2)
for numbers with 2 digits, e.g. 09
or, if more is your requirement
Format string: $num(%track%,3)
for numbers with 3 digits, e.g. 009

In your case, with the 11 files, the track numbering wizard should create the leading zeros, if you select all 11 files. You could even set the starting value to 0

Screenshot with tag column enabled.

Looks good, can you reproduce the error you're describing?

Yes. I removed all tags from the MP3s, then tried to re-populate the track numbers with the auto-numbering wizard. No go.

I can't reproduce it.
I took a bunch of 11 files
Selected them.
Opened the track numbering wizard Ctrl-K
Ticked the option for leading zeros, then OK and this is the result:
grafik

I took the same bunch of files and applied more or less the same procedure but set the starting value to 90
This is the result:
grafik

At least over here everything works as expected

Same here, works as expected when 10 or more files are added. Except with mp4.

Two tests that may help:

First, test your renumbering settings on a different set of Mp3 files from a different source, but using the renumbering settings that you have shown us in your screen shot. I suggest testing music files ripped from a CD, if you have any such. My guess is that renumbering will work as expected.

Second, please see this Help page for file checking tools: How to check files for errors?

Use a utility like Mp3diags to check some of the Mp3 files that won't renumber and tell us what (if any) anomalies are reported. A screen shot of the Mp3diags results would be helpful.

Also, in the future please add the Track column to your Mp3tag screen shots (it is missing above). That is important because the Auto-numbering Wizard fills only the Track and DiscNumber tags.

Found it! I decided to drop back and punt. I uninstalled, rebooted, and reinstalled. Apparently there was a problem with the software (see attached image). I did run MpDiag.exe on the MP3 files, and all it said was it was not happy with various quality issues. I thank everybody for the help in trying to locate the problem. Well done!

Glad you got it working, albeit mysteriously. The referenced error message is not related to auto-numbering — it's raised when there is a problem unregistering the Explorer context-menu extension of Mp3tag.

It's most likely related to those not further specified quality issues.
