Feature Request: Tabbed Windows

Many times I’ve opened a big directory of files looking to change something about the format of track titles. Often in the middle of doing this I notice something about a particular album that needs a different kind of edit. It would be great if I could highlight those files and spawn a new tab in Mp3tag. Or, if those files are suspected to be only part of an album, highlight them, select “View in Explorer” and then open a new tab or a new instance of Mp3tag just to work on the files in Explorer.

Of course, it’s tricky as any edits made here would need to pop up a “Refresh changed files” window in any other open Mp3tag sessions involving those files.

Anyway, I’m trying to come up with a way to avoid the situation where several thousand files are loaded into Mp3tag and selecting a subset to work on causes the entire contents of the Mp3tag window to be replaced only to need reloading later to continue the original task.

You could apply a filter which reduces the number of displayed files.
As soon as you remove the filter, the old list is shown without the need to reload.

Ok, that’s an option. What often happens is that I’ll notice something about the tags of one file that affects all files from that album even though they are not all in the current window. What I do now is right-click to “Open in Explorer” and just leave that Explorer window open on my desktop to remind me to come back to it later.

I was looking for some alternative that would allow me to deal with the edit when I first notice it and not depend on my later remembering what it was I wanted to change.

Even something as basic as allowing multiple Mp3tag instances to be simultaneously open would be helpful.

You could also sort by a property like path and then press Ctrl-G to select a group of files with the same contents as the first selected file.
The discussion about several instances of MP3tag has be held a couple of times and nothing has changed in the meantime.
see e.g. this one from 2014:

But so was the discussion about font selection - and now it is possible.
So, until the feature is implemented, I would suggest that you either adapt your workflow so that it uses already existing functions or live with the way you currently chose.

Maybe this:

Make sure "at exporting tags" is check-marked in Options > Messages
Export the path, or any desired information, of the oddball track(s) to a desk top text file. (check-mark "Append data")
Click "Yes" when asked "Display Export file now?"
Edit the text file by adding any information to explain the issue.

There will be a record of files to process after the original task is finished.

Add me to the group wanting multiple instances. Tabbed windows would be another great way to achieve this.

I acknowledge we don’t have this. I am simply adding my voice to the clamor.

Here is my most common use of this: I am tagging something new. I realize after starting that another folder/album falls into the same pattern. I want to be consistent, so I load the older folder, make notes of whatever tags I care about, then reload the original folder. Imagine how much cleaner this process would be if we had tabbed windows.
