I would like clear the Artist field for all songs in a folder. I have thousands of songs. Any idea?
Load the files into MP3tag.
Select them all (Ctrl-A)
Go to the field in the tag panel and select <blank> from the dropdown list.
Press Ctrl-S or click the save tool in the tool bar to save the modification.
Or use the extended tags dialogue Alt-T on the loaded and selected files and use the Delete button on the selected field.
Or try Convert>Tag-Tag for the field and set as
Format string: %dummy%
Please note: if you delete the contents of a fields then the field does not exist in the file any more. There is no "table" that can be filled in.
In general, I wonder why anyone should remove the ARTIST field - it is one of the most important fields in a file (besides the TITLE) and it will be very hard to get the data back.
E.g. I have an album in mind "40 versions of Summertime", all versions by different artists. So how would you distinguish these only from the metadata if the artist is missing?
If you want to do that repeatedly, you could also use an Action with the Type "Remove Fields":

From the documentation:
Removing embedded cover art
Use PICTURE as field name if you want to remove cover art from the tags.
BTW:
You can not "clear" one field ("clear" the content but keep the tag itself).
If you want to remove the content of a tag, you also have to remove the tag itself.
There are no empty tags.
Thanks. The Alt-T method worked for me.
I am removing the Artist field for some Hindi songs where it doesn't matter who the artist is because there are only a handful artists and I know who they are. Also, my music player displays only one field and it would make sense to show only the more important field - the title.
As I said: it is usually very hard to get information back, once it got deleted.
You could have left the ARTIST field as it is if the player ignores it - it wouldn't hurt then, would it?
Yet, you could add the contents of ARTIST to TITLE so that you see the whole information in that single field that the player supports.
And as soon as you get a decent player that lets you sort and filter your tracks by various properties then you could remove the artist data from the title field again to get properly structured data in the fields.
But in the end: that is just my opinion, you are, of course, free to do with your collection whatever you like.
Thanks for the tip on removing artwork. That worked like a charm.
However, when I used the above method to remove the ARTIST field, the ARTIST field was cleared but the field label itself remains. As well, I later found out that when I opened the files in another app that the field contents have not changed. I still see the artist names. Do I have to explicitly save the files in MP3Tag after I make the modification?
Yes, I would like to remove the tag itself. The methods mentioned here do not remove the tag. The "Artist" tag remains, though the data has been supposedly removed. It turns out that nothing has changed after I used this process.
This solution has not worked.
I do not understand this. I did a CTRL-A , which highlighted all the songs, but after that what exactly do I do? I don't follow "Go to the field in the tag panel and select from the dropdown list" . What tag panel? I see File, Edit, View, Convert, Actions, and Tag Sources. I went to each of them but I do not see anywhere. The only Delete I see deletes the files - certainly not what I want. ![]()
By default this is on the left side of the file list. You may have disabled it, make sure View>Tag Panel is checked, or you can toggle it with Ctrl-Q as well.
If you look closely after more than one file is selected there will be a drop-down list on the right end of any field where there are more than a single entry. If you click to open the list, one of the choices will be to <blank> the field.
A field cannot exist as blank. If the field remains, there must be something left behind - a space character or something else that may not be visible. Use the <blank> option to ensure the field is truly cleared.
The other challenge could be that there are different tag types in use if these are mp3 files like ape, id3v1, and/or id3v2. Check the settings to display all of these. There is some helpful info in this thread. Reading Tags Types
Which application was that?
Check whether that application has its own database where it also saved tag data - then that would have to be updated.
Also, do not mix the presence of fields and the option to display a field in the user interface if there might be data.
There are no empty fields in a file, if there is not data for a field, the field cannot be found in that file.
In respect to tag panel, file list etc. it would be nice of you to get acquainted with the program better perhaps by consulting the documentation:
because then such pointless discussions about
would not be necessary.
Esp. as you say that
but you do not sett "Tag-Panel" in that menu.
Please show us a screenshot from your Action "Remove Fields" and a screenshot from your music file if you press Alt+T(View -> Extended Tags).
Do you try to remove a tag from a MP3 or FLAC or any other format?
