I use the export and import functions in MP3Tag to selectively copy specific tags from one set of audio files to another via .csv files.
I’ve just come across this thread here on the forum, which discussed exporting tags with line breaks into .csv files. This method works without any problems and the line breaks are preserved.
Unfortunately, after trying a few things, I haven’t managed to re-import a .csv file containing fields with line breaks using the ‘Text File – Tag’ function. With .csv files that don’t contain line breaks, it works as usual without any problems.
In my case, it’s exclusively the comments field where I’d like to use line breaks so that the information there can be formatted more clearly.
Perhaps someone on the forum knows a way to make this happen.
For MP3tag a linebreak indicates the end of the record. To import data from a text file with several records, each records must be only 1 line without linebreaks.
The only way around it would be in the source file to replace the linebreaks with a printable unique character or character combination (e.g. ##), to get a single line, import that data and then replace the ## in MP3tag with linebreaks.
Replacing line breaks with printable characters via $replace funktion the works perfectly well, but I haven’t managed to use the same scripting function to replace those printable characters with line breaks again.
Perhaps you could give me a quick heads-up on that.
After you have imported the data try
Convert>Tag - Tag or an action of the type "Format tag field" for COMMENT
Format string: $replace(%comment%,##,$char(13)$char(10))
(provided the printable characters are ##)
