is it possible to add cover art to multiple tracks in various albums unattended, some albums have the cover art in the root folder some not, i assume this isn`t possible, even using an online source

MP3tag only retrieves covers with the help of websource scripts on album basis or imports pictures from the file system if you can name a pattern to address them.
