Long time for installation on d:\ directory

Hi Florian,

Thanks for your good jobs on Mp3tag.exe.

I would explain a wish: could installation on d:\ else c:\ be faster, the duration is almost 15 mn due to creation of "d:\WinApps\Mp3tagUninstall.exe".

See you

Guy Bapst

This is new to me, normally it doesn't matter where you install Mp3tag. What kind of drive is drive d:\ ?

I just installed the downloaded version with the portable installation on an external USB drive - and it took less than a minute.

It’s a HDD - NTFS - 104Go free/931Go (c:\ is a SSD - NTFS - 12Go free/118Go).

I've been using Mp3Tag for several years as a portable installation on a secondary mechanical HDD without issues (including now).

This only happens with the Mp3Tag installer, or does other software in the same configuration also triggesrs your reported issue?

Also, as a side note, can you verify the health status (a S.M.A.R.T. monitoring program can do this) of your HDD?

Thanks Florian, ohrenkino and rboss,

To answer, yes it happens only with Mp3tag installer; I have installed Stelarium recently (1 Go on d:; visualisation of planets and stars in position and zoom) and there was no issue.

Health status of d:\ is OK for Windows/properties of D:/error checking/check; Ccleaner and Glary Utilities.

It seems has it is not enough free place IN ONE BLOCK and uninstall (during installation) has to SWAP; there are 100Go free, but perhaps fragmented. Could it be a problem?

Even if that were the problem (which I doubt - on SSDs it should not matter at all how many fragments there are) - the space management on the storage devices is completely beyond control of MP3tag but a task for the OS.

I would look for Antivirus programs that block or slow down such installations.

The d:\ drive is an HDD (c:\ is an SSD).

I use the virus and threat protection built into Windows. My computer runs Windows 10 (incompatible with Windows 11).

I can't find anywhere to specify Mp3tag as a trusted program.

See e.g. here:

and perhaps this (external) Microsoft page:

It doesn't seem to be coming from the antivirus software.

Here's what I did:

  1. Uninstalled d:\winapps\ (without checking "Remove configuration data"). => 3"

  2. Restarted Windows.

2.5 I found two directories under
C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Roaming\Mp3tag [07/02/2023]
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mp3tag [18/08/2025]

  1. Installation under C:\Program Files (x86)\Mp3tag [worked in 2025] => OK in 5".

So I'll stop there, without really having found the cause of the problem, but under C:\ on SSD it works very well.

Thank you all for your support.

Best regards,

Guy

It looks to me like you mixed installations of 2 versions without de-installation of the previous version first. If you do an update installation, you have to stay in the previous folder, I think.
If you want a new installation destination, you should remove the old installation first.

I uninstalled Mp3tag, but there is still information in the two directories dated today [Roaming and Programs (x86)].

In Roaming, the Mp3tagError.log file shows:

Mp3tag v3.33.1 - 02/08/2026 - 5:33:51 PM
OS Version: Windows 10 (build 19045), 64-bit
Build: Feb 6 2026 11:30:54 (64-bit)

AppPath: 20,886,024,192 bytes free (C:\Program Files (x86)\Mp3tag)
DataPath: 20,886,024,192 bytes free (C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Roaming\Mp3tag\data)
TempPath: 20,886,024 bytes free (C:\Users\Guy\AppData\Local\Temp\Mp3tag v3.33.1)

Do you think I can delete it manually at this point?

Is the folder for the 32-bit installation.
Apparently, you installed the 64-bit version over the 32-bit installation.
Or in any case: there is still a 32-bit-version download available.
Use that to de-install the 32-bit version.
Do the same with the 64-bit version so that you have an MP3tag-free system (except for the configuration data in Roaming).
Then install the 64-bit version, if you want to use that one.

YES! ohrenkino you've got it!
Thank you very much for the time you spend.

And now it's completly clear for me.

Installation was very fast (5").
