Slightly off topic, but since you brought it up - This is going to be different for each user depending on their needs. With huge storage space options one can keep very large libraries in lossless formats like FLAC or ALAC. The mp3 format still has some benefits when the target is a portable player or perhaps for a car radio. But once the mp3 conversion is made the damage is done.

The best advice that can be made here is to choose one platform to do all of your editing. Mixing software like mp3tag, TRAKTOR, iTunes, WMP, and others to do your tag editing is bound to have issues like this.

That's not practical for DJ's, unfortunately.

We need to be able to do a preliminary "baselining" of tags in an mp3 file before importing it into our collection (MP3Tag is PERFECT for this), but we also need to "live input/live edit" tags to the file while we are DJ'ing, too. And that can ONLY be done in Traktor's Browser (or, whatever DJ app you use).

Luckily for us Traktor users, combining regular consistency checks, and using MP3Tag, is a perfect solution.

MP3Tag is flexible enough to deal with any complications! :wink:

In your case I would still suggest you have chosen a distinct path. Once you have acquired your music files through ripping or a digital service, mp3tag is used to improve the tag details, then move on to TRAKTOR.

Since the DJ software has implemented many discreet labels, it is best to remain in that platform once these have been established. OR at least understand that these private data fields will not be visible in some other software like mp3tag. Could this potentially lead to problems when going back and forth though, with data being lost or overwritten?

We are reaching an interesting point… for an mp3 file, is there a tag field the can be edited in traktor and read in mp3tag…

On my side, in traktor, i I only edit « genre » and « comment » field.

Wouldn't it be easiest if you tried the various Traktor fields and see which modification can be seen in MP3tag?

ALL of the standard tags can be edited in Traktor, and read in MP3Tag.

The only ones that CANNOT be read in MP3Tag, are the ones that Traktor stores ONLY in it's Collection.nml.

Comment2 is DEFINITELY such a Traktor only tag field/tag container.

You need to think of it like this - Tags live in the actual mp3 file. Anywhere you take that music file, those text tags will accompany it. BUT - just because the tags is there with the file, it doesn't mean that it can be read in whatever program you open it in. MP3Tag is the single GREATEST program for doing this.

ALT+T is your friend!

However, other programs, especially other DJ programs (I'm looking squarely at Serato & Rekordbox here!) don't always give you the option to DISPLAY all of the tags in the file. Even worse, some programs DO allow you to show tags, BUT, for some ridiculous reason (and, Traktor does this too, in fact) they change the name/header for that tag in their browser!!!

So, what will display in MP3Tag as MIXARTIST, is displayed in Traktor as Remixer, and, what is displayed as PUBLISHER, is shown in Traktor as Label, and ALBUM is shown in Traktor as Release! Not great, admittedly...

So what you need to get your head around, is the difference between a tag this is stored IN THE MUSIC FILE, and a Traktor Tag that is stored in the Collection.nml. When you load a track in Traktor, it gathers the tags from the music file, AND FROM THE COLLECTION.NML and combines all of the Traktor and non-Traktor tags to poulate the Browser and the Deck Headers with ALL of the metadata that Traktor is able to identify for that track... The .nml gets updated every time you open a music file, or update tags in-line in the browser (or, carry out a consistency check).
