I'm new to the site so please forgive me if this topic has been discussed before.
When Sonos tracks play on my laptop (Win 11) the Title, Artist and Album names are displayed. When the same tracks are played on my Samsung Galaxy devices, the Title, Artist names are shown, but instead of the album name, the system calls the name of the folder the track is in. If I put the tracks in a file called 'Bananas', Windows displays the same information as above, but the Android device shows 'Title', Artist' and 'Bananas'!
Sonos are telling me that their Windows 11 system reads idv3, but Sonos on Android devices need to read idv3 Extended.
I have suggested to the that as my Android devices read the 'Title' data, mp3Tag must be utilising idv3 Extended......so the 'Album' data should be read and displayed. They cannot answer this, nor can they give me any information on how I can ensure that my tags are all idv3 Extended.
I can find nothing on the internet to clarify this bizarre statement from Sonos so I am asking you if you can help.
In a nutshell, how can I ensure that my data is in the idv3 Extended format that Sonos insist on?
This is an extract from a Sonos Support response to my queries:
Title Display on Android App:
Yes, to ensure your track titles display properly on the Sonos Android app, the "Title" field in the ID3v2 Extended metadata needs to be correctly populated. This can usually be done using a third-party metadata editor that supports full ID3v2 tagging. Some popular tools include MP3tag (Windows), Kid3 (cross-platform) or MediaMonkey (Windows).
Album Name Tag:
The Sonos Android app reads the "Album" field from the ID3v2 Extended tag. If your current metadata is stored only in legacy or non-standard fields, the app may not display it. Unfortunately, detailed documentation on “ID3v2 Extended” is limited publicly, as the implementation can vary slightly between software platforms. However, tagging tools like Mp3tag let you explicitly view and edit these extended fields.
Folder Name Behaviour:
You are right that a folder name is not a metatag. What you have described seems to be the app defaulting to displaying the folder name when certain metadata (e.g., album or title) is missing or unreadable.
Sonos have been very insistent with regard to idv3 Extended.
As I said, Sonos are referring to the Android app.......but the 'Title' field is read OK.
When I select the 'View' 'Extended Tags' in mp3Tag, the only data shown are 'Album', 'Artist' and 'Genre'. If I edit the Album name and save it, it makes no difference to the info on the Android device screen. It still shows the folder the track is in.
mp3Tag shows all the tags in a spreadsheet format........the Sonos Android app has nothing similar. It just shows folders with tracks inside in the same way Windows Explorer does.
But does the Sonos-App show the correct album that Mp3tag shows for the tag "Album"?
A screenshot of the extended tags (ALT-t) in Mp3tag would still be useful.
No. That is what I keep saying. The album name is not being read by the Sonos Android App. The attached photos show Welcome to the Machine played on my laptop (Win 11), my Android phone, and the mp3Tag Extended Tags window. You will see that the Android app shows 'Albums' not the Album name. 'Albums is the folder that Wish You Were Here is in.......
If you move this test-song in a folder called \TestFolder
and then load it again, do you see TestFolder instead of Albums behind YPink Floyd in your SONOS app?
If the answer is yes, I don't see how Mp3tag could affect the behaviour of your Sonos app.
Mp3tag let you change the metadata as expected.
If the app cannot read it, there is not much that Mp3tag can do about it.
That's OK.
You have selected multiple tracks with different content in the fields ALBUMARTIST, ARTIST, COMPOSER, TITLE and TRACK.
Therefore, you see "< keep >" as one of the possible next modifications.
If you press OK, nothing will be changed.
Then I would ask the SONOS developers if they can change this behaviour and read/show the content from your ALBUM field.
No.
As I wrote:
ID3v1 and ID3v2.3 and ID3v2.4
Alt + T (Menu View -> Extended View) is only an "extended" view of all metadata, compared with the "spreadsheet" default columns in the Mp3tag File List or the left Tag Panel default fields.
