I’ve got a couple of actions going in MP3tag, and I wondered if anyone had an action for scraping lyrics from t’interweb and inserting them into tracks? If not, can this be a feature that could be added?
See e.g. this thread:
Thanks for helping. Not sure I understand half that thread, but I did download some plugins for Musicbee that were mentioned but they must be old as none of them worked.
What I’m hoping for is someone who might have, or know how to make a script for MP3tag to scrape lyrics. Like…as an action maybe?
You would have to try out which web source script works for you.
If Musicbee does not, perhaps Musixmatch does.
Anyway: further down the thread you say that you tried foobar2000 and it worked for you. Wouldn't it be the easiest way to continue to use that workflow?
I won’t use Foobar. Musicbee automatically adds lyrics if it can find them. But I use MP3tag extensively before anything goes to musicbee, so it’d be nice to be able to do all the tag work in one go before they get added to musicbee. One of the reasons is simply that I have control over the process, and also I just like all things in one place. Musicbee is primarily for displaying and playing albums. MP3tag is primarily for getting them all ready to be displayed and played.
so something has changed since
all the other information required for MP3tag can be found here:
which means: there are already web source scripts to get lyrics from web sites.
You can’t expect that 3 years ago I did something and that is still relevant now. What’s the point of bringing it up? Things change.
I followed your link to a 20 year old post. Sadly I don’t understand what they’re all on about. It doesn’t seem to be relevant to my question. Thanks for trying to help anyway though.
The thread started 20 years ago. The last update was in 2021
But I don't know what these dates have to do with your problem.
AFAI understood it: you are looking for a way to get lyrics into the files.
The linked thread provides such a web source script.
Your other thread from 3 years ago looked for a way to get lyrics for a whole album. There was and still (2025) is no way in MP3tag to achieve that.
If you look for lyrics of a single file, then see whether the available web source scripts that are dedicated to find lyrics help you.
I did not see such a script, just chatter about heavy metal and stuff that I didn’t really understand.
And are you really trying to tell me that just because something was 3 years ago, it should still be? Have you seen how many changes MP3tag has been through in 3 years? Are you trying to help or just in a bad mood with me??
TBH I don't like it to tell the same things over and over again, although I cannot avoid that always.
So far, I have not seen that any additional information about getting lyrics into files has been found.
Everything is still as it was described in the thread from three years ago, except that Foobar seems to be no option for you any more.
Right now you have everything at hand to devise your new workflow.
If you don’t like being on repeat it may be time to stop answering? No-one likes being challenged or confronted by someone who is jaded.
I have nothing to devise my new workflow, I don’t even understand the thread you gave me which is 20 years old. I shall look around elsewhere for advice. But thanks for the time you’ve given.
In this case there has really been no change to the approach for seeking lyrics through mp3tag. This still requires using a web source script. There are various versions that have been submitted by the community but nothing really different since you last tried.
A quick search for lyrics scripts comes up with several topics.

I guess the other side to that is the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
I am sure you have your reasons for this. But the general consensus from most is that many of the FB tools already perform well. The lyrics tool is one of them. I doubt you will see anything specific developed within mp3tag for this reason.
Thanks for your reply. But, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” what has that got to do with anything?
I can’t believe there’s so much passive aggression fromme simply asking a question.
I suggest you drink the beer you hate as most people like it and it makes them happy. I thin you need some happy in your life.
For one of the best programmes there is for what it does, it’s got one of the most morose and unhelpful support teams. I shall leave you to your mediocrity.
I think you are reading something into my reply that doesn’t exist. I simply stated that there has been no change since you last asked. And since there is already a solution available, albeit from a separate resource, one likely wasn’t coming any time soon from within mp3tag. Sorry it isn’t the answer you want to hear, but it is the current answer to your question.
There isn’t a specific answer I wish to hear. I asked if anyone had a decent script to use as an action for scraping lyrics directly from MP3tag. What…WHAT is wrong with that question??
It seems that instead of a good idea you are upset that I don’t want to use Foobar. Then you argue with me back and forth….why?
I asked a very simple question which was a reasonable and intelligent one. If you hate me for it stop reading my posts.
If you want to have that function specifically as an action then it is not possible. It is not possible to access web sources with an action.
If you want to get lyrics with any method from inside MP3tag, then it is down to the web source scripts.
There is nothing wrong with asking. The simple answer is “No.” The more complete answer is “There is currently no direct function in mp3tag to fetch lyrics from the web, but there are existing web scripts that can do this.”
Some alternative methods have also been offered that you don’t want to use. Nothing wrong with that either.
Nothing wrong with alternatives. It’s the attitudes. You should seriously consider not responding to anyone for a while so you can regain your courtesy equilibrium.
Thanks everyone for participating in this discussion. I'm going to summarise where we've landed and close this thread on a constructive note.
What @GaryF is looking for: a way to fetch lyrics directly within Mp3tag as part of his tagging workflow, ideally through an action he can run on multiple files.
The current technical situation:
- Mp3tag cannot fetch web content through Actions. This is a limitation of how Actions work.
- The available method are Tag Sources, which fetch data one file at a time from online sources.
- There are several community-created lyrics web source scripts, though they may need testing to find which sources still work reliably.
For @GaryF specifically: I understand the existing topics can be confusing and that you're looking for a clearer starting point. If you're interested in trying the suggested Tag Sources Scripts, please revisit the topic [WS] Import lyrics from websites
If something you find in there is unclear, feel free to start a fresh topic asking, e.g., "Can someone suggest a working lyrics web source script with simple installation and usage instructions?". Please keep in mind that this would only work for one file at a time.
For now, I take your original question as a feature request — however, I don't want to elicit high hopes for a speedy realisation.
Thanks @ohrenkino and @MotleyG for trying to help!
