I'd like to have some information about classical music (and opera) CDs so that I can enter the metadata correctly. For example, The four seasons by Antonio Vivaldi.
Artist: Vivaldi or the conductor (or other)?
album artist?
year: the date the work was written, or the date the CD was released?
If files are arranged in folders, by artist with sub-folders by album, should the artist name be that of the artist, the composer or conductor (or other)?
I did find a lot of informations. There were a few points that weren't clear (like the distinction between artist and album artist) but I finally understood.
However, still concerning classical music, in which field should I enter the date of composition of the work?
There is AFAIK no specific field for the composition date.
On this website, you can find some suggestions but they also don't have a specific field for it. **
If this date is important for you, you can create your own like COMPOSITION_DATE.
Please note: It's highly unlikely that any playing software out there will show you this date.
** Just for the record:
Of course you can enter a DISCNUMBER, unlike stated in "Axiom 11".
I had seen the originalyear field in the list but I guess it's a reserved data for a first edition of a disc or something like that.
So it might work with an original field. And it doesn't matter if audio players don't see it, it's just informative and visible in MP3Tags or Puddletag.
Remember this is your personal library. The standard fields and their intended purpose are a good guideline but you are free to use these or any custom fields as you wish.
Just keep in mind whatever player you choose may be limited in which fields you may be able to see or to help browse.
Note that on the link you gave, they state that for music of this kind, the name of the artist and composer must be the same. They use the performer tag to define the main musician or the orchestra that played (which is much better suited to album artist).
this would be the same CD (according to the barcode) at MusicBrainz and this the recording details for the track #01 at the same Source.
Again: It depends on the playing and displaying software what kind of information should be saved in which field if you want to like to see and use them.
Most player will read (and can sort by) ALBUMARTIST, but not PERFORMER.
Most player will read (and can sort by) ARTIST, but not by COMPOSER.
But even some original tags can be problematic. For example, Interprète (performer) and Compositeur (composer) are supposed to be recognized in my audio player (Audacious under Linux) but don't display anything.
When I ripped this CD, I let the database fill in the tags and I added the others manually, following your advice.
I've provided two screenshots: Puddletag and MP3Tag. They are ok, which shows that the tags are good.
Earlier, today, I opened one of the FLAC files in Fre:ac, to see if everything matched. It's a good match, so the software seems to be doing the job properly.
Note: this subject was related to a problem posed by a friend of mine, a great classical music lover, who doesn't know much about computers and who wanted to get the best possible information about his music for his audio player.
