Trouble with accented characters (Android music app)

Hello,
I'm posting here in the hopes that this community has experience working with multiple character sets in Android. I have a pair of Android music apps: one for playing music (Simple Music Player) and one for editing MP3 tags (Smart MP3 Tagger), and both apps have difficulty with accented characters from eastern European languages. Sometimes such characters are displayed correctly by the apps for one file, and garbled for the next.

Outside these apps, these same characters are consistently displayed correctly by various Android file managers, and of course mp3tag displays them correctly on my Windows PC. I've contacted the developers about this problem; but, they don't seem able to willing to troubleshoot the problem. I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight into what, exactly, is going on. I'm happy to provide further info as required.

If you are not satisfied with the apps, use different ones. Tagging usually does not improve the players' functions.
