Where are Mac preferences stored/named?

I've made a set of re-tagging groups, overall setup etc on my desktop that I would like to copy over to be able to use on my laptop when necessary. I've looked for an "mp3tag" preference file as well as anything else I could imagine in both the main and user libraries but can't find one. Is the preference file stored in user>library>prefs or is it somewhere else? If it is stored there, can anyone tell me what it's called?

As a background information: settings for apps from the Mac App Store are stored in
~/Library/Containers/
where you have a sandboxed environment for all the different special folders.
